Need further explanation

edit

"Burial rights" is tossed about in this article like the rest of the world is supposed to know what that means. My first impression is that it refers to the right of a family to bury its dead, but from context this is obviously not the meaning intended. There is no Wikipedia article on burial rights. Please define region-specific terms in the article if you are going to use them. 71.204.204.249 13:19, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Burial rights

edit

Having a cemetery under the control of a given church would mean that all of the 'income' from a funeral would go to that church. When the population expanded and more churches were built it was not surprising that a natural reluctance to 'lose control' of funerals developed. Such an iniquity was not sustainable in the long term and the right of burial - having their own cemetery - was eventually granted to new churches. This is my understanding of the situation. "Shakespeare's Prose"?

edit

H'mmm...didn't know about much prose attributed to Shakespeare. Would someone please tell us about it, or change the reference? 70.153.159.70 (talk) 16:02, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Corpse-candle and its kin

edit

Till recently, Corpse-candle pointed here, Corpse fire and Corpse candle to Will-o'-the-wisp, and Corpse light to St. Elmo's fire. I've uniformised them all to Will-o'-the-wisp but perhaps they should all point here instead... 4pq1injbok (talk) 03:42, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. I've changed Corpse candle (and its hyphen/case variants) to point here since it fits better thematically imo. Corpse fire should similarly be redirected to here, although I haven't done so yet. I'm not sure about Corpse light--it'd need research to determine the most suitable redirect target. --92.6.206.226 (talk) 19:36, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Original Research

edit

It would help if the suggested 'OR' was highlighted. I started this article in my early days and refs sometimes got split up. But no 'OR' added to my memory. Rosser Gruffydd 20:02, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Quality of References and Article

edit

I question the quality of the references on which this article relies. There are two blogs (9,18); a dead link of baffling relevance (5); another dead link to a website on ley lines (14); and three to a ley lines website (4,6,12). There is also a photograph of a tourist information sign (2) which, though of probably better quality than the foregoing, is not exactly something held in the British Library. The "External Links" comprise a ley lines website, a Wikibooks page, a blog, a fellwalking site (possibly a blog) with adverts and inaccurate information about the Wasdale/Eskdale coffin road, and lastly, a dead link.

Corpse roads are real geographic and historical entities, particularly in Britain. It is disappointing, therefore, that this article has very little connection with any serious studies on this subject. The "Origins" section is not supported by the only reference provided (and the quality of that reference is questioned above) and, as I understand it, this section is largely incorrect. The rest of the article is overwhelmed by stories about superstitions. There are numerous corpse roads across Britain, many of which are walked today by hill walkers and the like. I am sure many would look to Wikipedia for some real information on the subject - but leave empty handed.

If any article was ever begging for a proper rewrite, this is it.
