Award for High school

edit

Somebody added "and received the Yorkshire Award for Best School 2005/2006." No such award exists? Do you have the full reference? 62.3.70.68 21:16, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Green belt

edit

There are a few green tendrils between the rest of the Hull urban area and Cottingham. but there is continous urbanisation along the Newgate Street/Thwaite Street/Hull Road/Inglemire Lane area. also there is no rule that suburbs have to be within the civic boundaries of a place : indeed the term originated to refer to places outside the boundaries! Largest village claim

edit

I have removed the references to other locations, for the second time, in the comparison of largest village as it is made on different basis depending on who is making the claim. For details of the claims see the wikilinked article. By not placing details of 2 selected places from the contenders it avoids the statement becoming POV. Rollercoaster?!

edit

Sounds untrue to me, but I can't be sure, what does everyone else think? Willplatts (talk) 07:53, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I haven't been, but I'm pretty sure that there's been stuff in the Hull Daily Mail about this. Fructis66 (talk) 15:41, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think it is improbable, I would have thought that there would be some coverage on BBC Radio Humberside around the launch date and I did not hear any while I was in the area. I have not seen anything in the Hull Daily Mail and Google throws up nothing. Keith D (talk) 15:22, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is a hoax as similar text has been inserted into a number of articles around the country. Keith D (talk) 23:17, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bronze Age Settlement

edit

I have removed "Late Bronze Age artifacts have been found in the village confirming settlement by the Beaker people." due to confused link of Beaker people to late bronze age when they were late neolithic/early bronze age + I've searched all the archives at University of Hull on Holderness archaeology and the wider web with no reference to Cottingham from the bronze age. I think this claim needs substantiation to be re-instated - especially as this claim seems to be directly copied into various Cottingham history sites without varification or further substantiation 86.28.157.51 (talk) 11:04, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have found a reference to iron age artifacts that are held by the British Museum - though there is no exact date or detailed information. They are also not listed in the British Museum's online reference [1] 86.28.157.51 (talk) 15:50, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Castle park estate

edit

Moved from Castle Hill Hospital

The Castle Park estate, lying on the land below the hospital grounds was built over a 20 year period from the late 1960s, the main builders including West and Larvin.

History accuracy - Cottingham Parks, Pauper Vilage, other..

edit
Park

according to http://www.cottinghamhighdev.co.uk/history-of-the-school/ and "In the Middle Ages the present school grounds formed part of a royal hunting forest to be enjoyed by the Prior of the Minster of St John, Beverley and their royal visitors, the status being preserved in the name Beverley Parks"

I think this may be innacurate

  • If the park is a royal hunting forest (Royal forest) then it is not the property of the Prior of Beverley ?
  • "Beverley Parks" is somewhere else - near beverley..

According to http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=910889 " Three of the manors of Cottingham which emerged in the 15th century had a share of the park and the woods" which may contadict both the royal forest and the beverley prior story.Oranjblud (talk) 16:37, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pauper village

diff

In the same period, around 1771 the Churchwardens of St Mary’s allocated land to the east of the village to poor families of Cottingham. The settlement was originally known as 'Paupers’ Gardens' and renamed 'New Village' in the 1820s - leading to the current name New Village Road, between Endyke and Middledyke lanes

Two sources date the "Pauper Village" to 1819, I haven't yet found the date of 1771. If it is relavent and not an error then this needs explaining.Oranjblud (talk) 21:03, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Workhouse

removed http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cottingham%2C_East_Riding_of_Yorkshire&diff=495800360&oldid=495800249

By 1783, a workhouse had been built as an extension to the school, with segregated male and female sections.

According to Pevsner a workhouse was built in 1729 (now the "Church House"), next to the (19th C.) free school.. English Heritage also gives a date of 1729.

The 1783 may be correct, but the limited info I have appears to contradict it. There may have been more than one, or the situation may be not as simple as Pevsner suggests. Needs a reference.Oranjblud (talk) 17:29, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Parrots

Are the parrots still there? 2010 I would assume they died last winter. This story needs some sort of closure..Oranjblud (talk) 13:45, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Merge school

edit

I have suggested that Cottingham Croxby Primary School be merged here as it is a non-notable primary, as per WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES. Any comments appreciated. CalzGuy (talk) 13:45, 7 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
