Merge left out info

edit

This article was allegedly "merged" with "country dance" (which is now redirected here) but the info in "country dance" is mostly not here. And this article is full of a lot of bad and incorrect information! Greg 02:41, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone care? Greg 02:48, 20 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I guess not. Oh well. Greg 05:34, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've now done the merge. SilkTork *SilkyTalk 10:24, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

'Country dancing' or 'Country dance'?

edit

This article was previously merged with the article 'Country dance' in 2007 and this name was kept, with the other article redirecting here. However, other articles on dance forms (e.g. Folk dance, Tap dance, Contra dance, etc.) use 'dance' rather than 'dancing'. For consistency, I believe that this page should be moved to 'Country dance' and that 'Country dancing' should redirect there. --Credema (talk) 04:47, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Done. Also moved talk page contents. LazyStarryNights (talk) 20:46, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Riverdance

edit

I'm going to remove the Riverdance reference. Riverdance is Irish step dancing (related to step and clog dances elsewhere) and is *not* Country Dancing.

I'm doing this immediately sine the article is ridiculous when it correctly differentiates between display (such as clog dances) and social dances such as country dancing and then references Riverdance. Ecadre (talk) 12:42, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Country Dance Globalization and Definition

edit

You have asked for Globalization and a better definition.

"Folk Dance" and "Traditional Dance" are terms that relate to any country and are globalized.

"Country Dance" is a very specific subset of this and applies only to dances derived from or related to the type of dances documented by John Playford in the "English Dancing Master" in 1650: "Plaine and easie Rules for the Dancing of Country Dances". The term appears in historical English documents prior to this as well.

The term "Country Dance" is used to mean this type of dance in England, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and, as far as I know, all other English-speaking countries. It is also used in the same way in other countries to which this type of dancing has spread, including most of Europe.

As such I believe that the definition is already globalized. If you disagree, please let me know what the problem is.

As for a better definition, this is the best that anyone has come up with so far. Country Dances have diversified so much, over the centuries and between countries, that is hard to be specific. This definition has been published on Country Dance forums and no-one has yet suggested any improvements.

Please could you be specific about what you feel is wrong with it?

Thanks. Happy dancing, John
