Talk:Crafty
ELO rating
editYou cannot just write "its ELO rating is about 2600." You need to state on which platform, using what kind of computer it can reach that performance. Ben T/C

edit- In the World Computer Chess Championships 2004 Crafty won the fourth place with same amount of points as the third place finisher, Fritz 8, despite running on stronger hardware than all other programs.
- is this praise or blame, or maybe just a typo? --Sigmundur 10:09, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- I agree--the wording here is confusing --Major_Small (talk) 16:18, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
It sounds to me as like Fritz 8 was running on stronger hardware than Crafty, and Crafty still won. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.30.159.224 (talk) 10:13, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
- No, see the official results: http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/icga/tournament.php?id=24 - Crafty was running on a slightly faster CPU than everything else. No idea about RAM size (very important) though. Lovingboth (talk) 20:43, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Not Free Software
editIt is not easy to find, but Crafty is definitely not free software (or "open source"). If you download a copy of the source code and look in main.c you will find this notice,
* All rights reserved. No part of this program may be reproduced in any * * form or by any means, for other than your personal use, without the * * express written permission of the authors. This program may not be used * * in whole, nor in part, to enter any computer chess competition without * * written permission from the authors. Such permission will include the * * requirement that the program be entered under the name "Crafty" so that * * the program's ancestry will be known. *
I made the corrections to the article to clear this up. Thanks! --Mosquitopsu (talk) 15:31, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
It is not proprietary either. At least freeware, but I guess it will be fair to refer to the licence directly 95.28.1.218 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 10:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC).
- Proprietary software is, by definition, just any software that is not free software. Crafty is without a doubt proprietary, as its license puts restrictions on usage as well as redistribution of the software. It thus remains, at least partly, exclusive property (hence "proprietary") of the authors. -- 178.25.90.217 (talk) 20:47, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
