editJust decided to add my own photo of St Nicholas's church which is I suppose the geographic centre of the new town in the oldest part usually just referred to as the village.
Origins of the name Cramlington
editRegarding the origins of the name "Cramlington": The most popular belief is that this ancient village derives its name from the Viking settlers: 'Kramel' the thegn or chief's name, followed by 'ing' which refers to a family group or kinship and ton is an enclosed farm or homestead. It is also thought that the name used to begin with a K rather than a C. See http://www.blythvalley.gov.uk/page896.htm
Another suggestion is that it is from an Anglo-Saxon word crumb meaning a bend - a bend in the river. See http://www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk/Place%20Name%20Meanings%20A%20to%20D.htm. Gp100mk 14:31, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
