Riot
editAnd the large scale riot wasn't. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/5117142.stm reports the incident and there were just a handful of people involved with a number of people watching. Look at the video and you'll see nothing really happening.
I found a reference later on to this 'wide scale riot' and the numbers were downscaled even further. I live not far from here and no-one knows of a riot as such.
The tennis section is a bit off, and I'm sure King Henry would agree as his tennis court was established in the 1500s. ~Geaugagrrl talk 06:20, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well-spotted. Here's what I've just removed:
- "It can be claimed that the modern Lawn Tennis game was invented here.
- In December 1873, Major Walter Badger Wingfield designed a game for the amusement of guests to his home; Nantclwyd, in Llanelidan in the Vale of Clwyd. According to most tennis historians, modern tennis terminology also derives from this period, as Wingfield borrowed both the name and much of the French vocabulary of Real Tennis and applied them to what is generally accepted as the origin of the modern game.
- Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the connection between a gentleman amusing his guests in Dyffryn Clwyd, some 50 miles from Cricieth, and the claim that "modern Lawn Tennis game was invented" in the town? Beats me! Enaidmawr (talk) 00:04, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Name dispute
editThe argument that Criccieth is the English form of the name and Cricieth the Welsh version has been contested in the past, and is not as clear cut as the article suggests. As I recall, in the early 1970s, prior to local government reorganisation, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg and other organisations campaigned for the town to use Cricieth. The then Criccieth Urban District Council argued strongly against the change, claiming that the Welsh version had always been Criccieth (and insisted on using the double-C even in Welsh texts). Their argument was basically that even a phonetic language like Welsh has anomalies, and likened Criccieth to Wrecsam (the Welsh form for Wrexham), which if it were spelt phonetically would be Recsam. Things became quite heated and, when the Wales Tourist Board produced literature about Cricieth, the council threatened to withdraw funding from them. The tourist board eventually backed down.
Can anyone provide further details on the naming controversy, preferably with citations, rather than the somewhat inaccurate passage that exists in the article at present? Skinsmoke (talk) 01:17, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- Although the controversy is familiar enough, I can't seem to find anything about it right now - annoyingly! The original Welsh name as found in Brut y Tywysogion was 'Cruceith' (MW Krukeith) and the form 'Cruciaith' is found in a famous poem by Iolo Goch (late 14th century). The etymology is not as straightforward as some sources suggest, but the most common is crug ('hillock' etc) + caeth (which could mean either 'serfs' or 'captives' here). 'Cricieth' is undoubtedly the correct form in Welsh (with all due respect to past burghers!). Perhaps an etymology section would be an idea? This could then include the c/cc "controversy". You might find these useful as well - Cricieth, Criccieth - as far as they go, although the second has some inaccuracies and the first doesn't really tell you much. I can give refs for the early forms, of course. Good work on the article: great improvement! Enaidmawr (talk) 17:12, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- Got round to it at last. Apologies for the delay: summer, life, and all that! Enaidmawr (talk) 22:58, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
I am confused over whether there is a formal and colloquial pronunciation for the name. Around 2010 I came across a website which claimed in its FAQ section that it is pronounced 'crick-key-eth' (/krɪˈkiːɛθ/ or /krɪˈkiːəθ/) and colloquially 'crick-yeth' (/ˈkrɪkjɛθ/). However, I am now unable to find it and the sources I have seen or heard since seem to use 'crick-yeth'. Tk420 (talk) 22:31, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
