Where to begin?

edit

When I see an article with such a general title, I would not expect to see a short article dealing only with two to three years CrimStats. I would expect a more longitudinal analysis at least starting from the Norman Conquest when, arguably, the Common Law began, and setting out a historical perspective dealing with such jurists as Coke and Bracton, before moving on to the development of statute law, the increasing sophistication of definitions of crime, particularly in the 19th century, and continuing to the present day. There's a strong distinction to be drawn between definitions of crime in historical perspective, the enforcement of those definitions, and the clear-up rates for reported offences. The article doesn't even mention the British Crime Survey, nor any of the leading British criminologists of the last fifty years. At best, the title is misleading, and at worst, this is a topic which is worthy not only of one article, but of several. But what do I know? I was only a research fellow in Criminology for three years. Rodhullandemu 01:55, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I agree; the article is still sorely lacking. I thought, coming to an article that was even worse, that I could at least make a start. In my case, I didn't feel I was in a position to decide what should be in this article, so I concentrated on what I was certain about. We have English criminal law, and Scots criminal law to partly cover this - I think they should be (and I shall) summarised in a short way here to provide some context, as you describe. I'll also write in the British Crime Survey, although that article also needs some work (but it absolutely needs to be included). Additional coverage might be a History of criminal law in England (and one for Scotland) to provide coverage of legal changes in crime. Shouldn't there be a section on Northern Ireland's laws? Is it covered by Ireland's laws? Simply south (talk) 20:58, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
