The caption is obviously incorrect. Not only the photo was taken in 2009 but United kits also prominently display a CWC winner badge, something they won in December 2008 and couldn't possibly have on their jerseys in May. Please, fix that. Trackfan20 (talk) 08:23, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

Should the lead include his nickname "CR7"? And if yes, should it be bolded or not? FMSky (talk) 21:04, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

  • No we don't do it for anyone else, and it's not encyclopedic content for the lead. Put it in the infobox and nowhere else. Also, this is currently already under discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Raúl de Tomás (that thread got sidetracked onto CR7 debate), and so we don't need an RFC when it's already being discussed. RFC is a last resort when other discussion fails, and the discussion there started 2 days ago. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:06, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
Per above, WP:MULTI and WP:RFCBEFORE, I've deactivated this RfC (which was malformed in the first place). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:52, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
  • No - he isn't 'also known' as CR7, that is his branding, which is a huge difference. I never heard Ronaldo being called 'CR7' by commentators or journalists etc. (or even fans) - and that is unlike the widespread use of e.g. the Gazza nickname. ~~`~
you can't be serious? "I never heard Ronaldo being called 'CR7' by commentators or journalists etc. (or even fans)" .. is just straight up wrong. please type in "cr7" into google, you would be surprised --FMSky (talk) 13:31, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
@FMSky: People in Brazil call him Robozão (Big Robot) as well, should we add "also known as Robozão"? No. It's as simple as that. BRDude70 (talk) 15:46, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
The difference is, one name is widely used (as seen by the over 60 mio. hits on google) and the other isnt (as seen by the 70 (!) hits on google). I cant believe you thought this is a valid argument -FMSky (talk) 15:47, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
While Google can be a good barometer, you also have to look at the hits themselves - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, all his branded merch and his football boots, Tripadvisor, all on the first page of results. Specific searches of The Guardian, Sky Sports, The Independent, The Telegraph, The Athletic bring up little. FourFourTwo, BBC, and especially ESPN use it a reasonable number of times to refer to him specifically. But I don't really think it warrants mentioning as a nickname in the lead unless it is in that last paragraph which touches on his marketability. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 16:38, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

@ItsKesha:

  • The Guardian (link): "...seems almost as hung up about Ronaldo winning the Ballon d’Or as CR7 himself."
  • Indepentent (link): "CR7, the brand and the man, would never see it that way, though."
  • The Athletic (link): "The CR7 bandwagon rolled back into town last week"
  • Sky Sports (link): "CR7: Cristiano Ronaldo in numbers"
  • The Telegraph (link): "CR7 can benefit more from attaching himself to a social cause than another endorsement"
All five are about Brand Ronaldo? That's why, if it should be mentioned, it should be in the paragraph about his marketability.
How can someone possibly interpret this as being about a "brand": "seems almost as hung up about Ronaldo winning the Ballon d’Or as CR7 himself."?? FMSky (talk) 17:51, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
It's a line about his agent (the beginning of the sentence starts: "Mendes – sharp black suit, Rolex, phone almost permanently to his ear") in an article about a film described by the Radio Times as "As much an exercise in showcasing conspicuous wealth as an insight into the man and his achievements, this is a vulgar vanity project that massively misses a unique opportunity". Of course it's about Brand Ronaldo. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 18:05, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
ItsKesha is spot on here - this is branding & marketing, not a nickname in the standard way. GiantSnowman 07:29, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
WE all know him as CR7 locally, its a popular way to call him, like we call Messi M10 and Zidane's Wikipedia article has him mentioned as Zizou, so why not name Christiano Ronaldo by which what most of us popularly call him? Why not just tate that "popularly known as CR7"? There are multiple WP:RS stating that. Why disregard the obvious? Dilbaggg (talk) 06:38, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

OK.... So here goes, I've spent a few hours this afternoon drafting up what should be an up to date Ronaldo webpage on wiki including all his outside football achievements, business interests, and lifestyle as well as updating facts and adding new ones. Perhaps you can read through it, take your time and work with what I've drafted... Ideally an article as important as Ronaldo needed some grammar checks in a few of the sentence written here; which I've done and also restructured and made the section easier to break down into sections and not just a few disassembled paragraphs without any order.

Outside football

Cristiano made a name for himself playing for Sporting and then in 2004 Euros in Portugal, but as his reputation grew from his time at Manchester United Ronaldo made many sponsorship deals for consumer products such as sportswear, the football boots he's worn since November 2012 has been the Nike Mercurial Vapor personalized CR7 edition and has worn over 60 different editions as of 2016, and is the 3rd athlete to get a lifetime deal from Nike.[1].[464] His commercial viability also involved soft drinks, clothing, automotive lubricants, financial services, electronics and video games.[465][466][467][468] Ronaldo was featured as the cover star of EA Sports' FIFA video game FIFA 18 and was heavily involved in the game's promotion.[469] His 'Siiii' goal celebration features in the FIFA series, accompanied with his own voiceover.[445] He was also the face of Pro Evolution Soccer, appearing on the covers of the 2008, 2012 and 2013 editions of the game.[470]

With earnings of €720 million (£615 million) from 2010 to 2019, Ronaldo was ranked second in Forbes list of The Highest-Paid Athletes Of The Decade, with only boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. earning more.[471] Forbes twice ranked Ronaldo first on its list of the world's highest-paid football players; his combined income from salaries, bonuses and endorsements was $73 million in 2013–14 and $79 million in 2014–15.[472][473] The latter earnings saw him listed behind only Mayweather on the magazine's list of The World's Highest-Paid Athletes.[474] In 2016, he became the first footballer to top the Forbes list of highest-earning athletes, with a total income of $88 million from his salary and endorsements in 2015–16.[475] He topped the list for the second straight year with earnings of $93 million in 2016–17.[476] He is the first footballer and only the third sportsman to earn $1 billion in their career.[477] Ronaldo is one of the world's most marketable sportsmen: SportsPro rated him the fifth most marketable athlete in 2012[478] and eighth most marketable athlete in 2013, with Brazilian footballer Neymar topping both lists.[478][479] Sports market research company Repucom named Ronaldo the most marketable and most recognised football player in the world in May 2014.[480] He was additionally named in the 2014 Time 100, Time's annual list of the most influential people in the world.[481] ESPN named Ronaldo the world's most famous athlete in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.[482][483][484][485]

Demand for a replica Ronaldo shirt has been high throughout his career. In 2008, Ronaldo's number 7 Manchester United shirt was the best-selling Premier League sports product.[496] In 2015, Ronaldo's number 7 Real Madrid shirt was the second best-selling worldwide, after Messi's number 10 Barcelona shirt.[497] In 2018, within 24 hours of his number 7 Juventus shirt being released, over 520,000 had been sold, with $62.4 million generated in one day.[498] And upon his return to Manchester United in summer 2021, his first day shirt sales broke the record once more for the club.[2]

In June 2010, during the build-up to the World Cup, Ronaldo became the fourth footballer – after Steven Gerrard, Pelé and David Beckham – to be represented as a waxwork at Madame Tussauds London.[510] Another waxwork of him was presented at the Madrid Wax Museum in December 2013.[511] In June 2015, astronomers led by David Sobral from Lisbon and Leiden discovered a galaxy which they named Cosmos Redshift 7 (CR7) in tribute to Ronaldo.[512]

On 23 July 2016, following Portugal's triumph at Euro 2016, Madeira Airport in Funchal was renamed as Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport.[513] The unveiling of the rebranded terminal took place on 29 March 2017, which included a bust of his head being presented.[514] The bust and the name change were controversial, with the lack of the bust's likeness to Ronaldo being ridiculed by comedians, including Saturday Night Live,[515] while the name change was subject to much debate locally by some politicians and citizens, who even started a petition against the move, an action criticised by President of Madeira Miguel Albuquerque.[516][514] A year later, sports website Bleacher Report commissioned sculptor Emanuel Santos to create another bust;[517] however, this bust was never used and a new one was made by a Spanish sculptor, shown to the public on 15 June 2018.[518] In 2007, C.D. Nacional renamed its youth campus Cristiano Ronaldo Campus Futebol (Cristiano Ronaldo Football Campus).[504]

Also being the sports personality he is he owns a lot of expensive real estate, including living in homes in Madrid, Manchester, New York[3], he also famous for his expensive taste in jewelry[4] and expensive cars.[5]

Internet

Ronaldo has established a strong online presence. The most popular sportsperson on social media, he counted over 500 million total followers across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by February 2021, making him the first person to pass half a billion followers.[487] The most-followed person on Facebook (148 million), the most-followed on Instagram (310 million) and the most-followed sportsperson on Twitter (92 million), his sponsors earned $936 million in media value across his accounts between June 2016 to June 2017.[476] Ronaldo has released two mobile apps. In December 2011, he launched an iPhone game called Heads Up with Cristiano, created by developer RockLive,[488] and in December 2013, he launched Viva Ronaldo, a dedicated social networking website and app.[489] Computer security company McAfee produced a 2012 report ranking footballers by the probability of an internet search for their name leading to an unsafe website, with Ronaldo's name first on the list.[490] He also holds 5 Guinness World Records including the most like athelete on 'Facebook' since 2015, and the most viewed male athlete on Wikipedia.[6]

TV Media, film and books

Cristiano Ronaldo has been involved off the pitch in hundreds of television and film appearances from the get go of his career, he's been made a household name in commercial TV and internet ads, TV shows, interviews, documentaries and has over 50 books available for purchase in his name.

Ronaldo has been the subject of many works, his first autobiography titled 'Moments' was published in December 2007.[491] His sponsor Castrol produced the television film Ronaldo: Tested to the Limit, in which he was physically and mentally tested in several areas; his physical performance was consequently subject to scrutiny by world media upon the film's release in September 2011.[492] Cristiano Ronaldo: The World at His Feet, a documentary narrated by actor Benedict Cumberbatch, was released via Vimeo in June 2014.[493] Also a documentary film directed by Anthony Wonke about his life and career, titled 'Ronaldo' was released on 9 November 2015.[494][495] Another documentary series produced by DAZN released in 2019 named 'The Making of'[7][8]was released in 2019 on the streaming app along with highlight reels from his best Champions league moments. As well as his own biographical documentaries he was also a part of the All or nothing : Juventus sports docuseries in 2020 is available on Amazon Prime. As well as TV shows comparing the icon to other all time great football players he also has an anime series 'Striker force 7' being created as a superhero series.[9].

Business interests

Ronaldo opened a fashion boutique under the name CR7 (his initials and shirt number) on the island of Madeira in 2006 and opened a second in Lisbon in 2008.[499] In partnership with Scandinavian manufacturer JBS Textile Group and the New York fashion designer Richard Chai, Ronaldo co-designed a range of underwear and sock line, released in November 2013.[500] He expanded his CR7 fashion brand by launching a line of premium shirts and shoes in July 2014.[501][502] In September 2015, Ronaldo released his own fragrance, "Legacy", in a partnership with Eden Parfums.[503]

In December 2013, Ronaldo opened a museum, Museu CR7, in his hometown of Funchal, Madeira, to house trophies and memorabilia;[505] the museum is an official sponsor of the local football team União da Madeira.[506][507] At a ceremony held at the Belém Palace in January 2014, President of Portugal Aníbal Cavaco Silva raised Ronaldo to the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry "to distinguish an athlete of world renown who has been a symbol of Portugal globally, contributing to the international projection of the country and setting an example of tenacity for future generations."Also in his hometown a bronze statue of Ronaldo, designed by artist Ricardo Madeira Veloso, was unveiled in Funchal on 21 December 2014.[509][508] Then above the museum is the first of the chain hotels in collaboration with Pestana Group opened in 2015 with another in Lisbon in 2016,[10][11] and then in 2021 the 'Pestana CR7 Times Square' hotel and restaurant were opened on West 39st street, Manhattan.[12]

There has been a disappointing effort to respond to the request, the Cristiano Ronaldo#Outside football section is well below par for an article of such repute, and I offered a very basic yet effective upgrade to specify Ronaldo's achievements outside football, I would also like to add charity, and example his charity Poker games he played in association with PokerStars. Trophies of Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has 34 titles in his senior career and not 32 as mentioned in the article. The missing titles are the 2008 Community Shield and the 2016 UEFA Super Cup, which were not contested by the player but must be included because he was part of the team. (talk) 16:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Ronaldo wasn't even at the 2016 Super Cup. He wasn't included in Real Madrid's squad for that game and didn't travel to Norway. As for the 2008 Community Shield, I don't know the reason he didn't play in that game but I would imagine it was an extended holiday after Euro 2008. Either way, there's no need to add competitions Ronaldo didn't win and wasn't involved in. – PeeJay 23:05, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
It’s true what you say, but you have to keep in mind that we’re talking about a team. Although Ronaldo did not play that Super Cup match, he was obviously part of it. Real Madrid certifies on its official website that the player was indeed champion of that cup without playing that match.[2][3] As for the 2008 Community Shield, Ronaldo did not play the final due to an injury that sidelined him from the match. However and similar to the previous case, he was part of the champion team.[4]Judasly(talk) 18:50, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
If Real Madrid consider Ronaldo to have won the 2016 Super Cup, why didn’t they take him to Norway? He wasn’t part of it at all. – PeeJay 13:34, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
In fact, if he had planned to wear it, he did not remember that the reason for not doing so was the injury he suffered in the final of the Euro 2016.[5][6]Judasly(talk) 09:49, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
None of this matters, he wasn’t involved in the 2016 Super Cup or the 2008 Community Shield. Sources don’t agree whether he should be credited with them, but the fact is that he wasn’t involved in either game, so there’s no reason for us to list those pages here. – PeeJay 16:21, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
These trophies may not be as valuable in themselves, but they are an additional trophy to add, and people constantly compare Ronaldo’s trophy record with other players. In the case of the UEFA Super Cup, does this mean that the player did not obtain this title even though his own ex-club certifies that he did obtain it even without having played the deciding match it on its official website?[7] I don’t quite understand the criteria. In the case of the Community Shield, Manchester United does not mention on its website the titles obtained by the player. However, other media do.[8][9][10][11]Judasly(talk) 12:21, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
How do you decide which players get credit for a trophy? If Ronaldo gets one for the 2016 Super Cup despite not being involved in the game at all (he literally wasn’t in the country at the time), why not the other members of the Real Madrid first team? Or their B team? Or the youth players? Even UEFA didn’t list Ronaldo among the Real Madrid squad for the 2016 Super Cup (not just the matchday squad, the registered squad that travelled for the game). This has been discussed here numerous times, so if you read back through the archive, you’ll see what I’m telling you is true. Do not add titles the player wasn’t involved in winning. – PeeJay 18:00, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Dear, the difference here is that we are talking about the players who normally make up the first team, not the alternative teams. Cristiano obviously belongs to the main team being one of the important players of the team, therefore it is illogical to think that he would not be part of the team unless something prevents it. Like Ronaldo, players Pepe, Toni Kroos, Gareth Bale and Keylor Navas should also include this title[12] -Judasly(talk) 13:40, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm not really interested in which players Real Madrid choose to assign titles to, of course they're going to assign as many titles as possible to their players to make it seem like they're more successful than they are. That said, that link you posted doesn't even support the idea that those players are credited with the title; in fact, it specifically mentions that those players weren't involved in winning that title. Please, read WP:DROPTHESTICK and accept this. – PeeJay 19:46, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
The logic is simple, UEFA were given a squad for the season which needed to be announced at the beginning of the season, so... Ronaldo was in the UEFA Real Madrid squad and is given a medal for 2016, and the same goes for Manchester United community shield, as all squad members receive a winner's medal whether they played on the field or not. Maybe someone can verify for this situation, but that is the theory. Cltjames (talk) 19:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Yes, UEFA were given a squad for the 2016 UEFA Super Cup, and Ronaldo wasn't in it. United didn't have to submit a full squad for the Community Shield, just the 18 who were involved on matchday, but Ronaldo wasn't in that one either. – PeeJay 19:46, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
No, but the squad for the season involved back up and would account to 23 members in the team, making Ronaldo part of the squad who is given a winner's medal, not just the 18 on the day. Honestly, this is Ronaldo's article, why not contact the player's management and ask whether he had a medal or not ?? Cltjames (talk) 19:49, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
The squad for the season is irrelevant to whether or not Ronaldo should be considered to have won the Community Shield. Also, how do you know which players would have received a medal? And what would contacting his management do for us? Possession of a medal is no indicator of a player's involvement in a competition. One-off games like the Community Shield and Super Cup shouldn't be listed unless a player was in a named squad for that competition, which Ronaldo wasn't for the 2008 Community Shield or the 2016 Super Cup. – PeeJay 19:54, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
You mention in your answer that a player should not be listed in the honors unless he was included in a team named for that dispute. In that sense, Messi should not be included in the honours of the 2005-06 UEFA Champions League by not being called up or even being in those called up for the match. –Judasly(talk) 15:07, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
First of all, why are you mentioning Messi? Second, Messi was part of the Barcelona squad for the 2005-06 Champions League and made six appearances in that competition; Ronaldo was not part of the Real Madrid squad for the Super Cup. – PeeJay 21:32, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Officially a team gets 40 medals in the Super cup for the squad and back room staff (UEFA Super cup article 9 trophy and medals), Ronaldo wasn't there on the day, and didn't get a medal on TV, however he was a part of the UEFA squad and can be deemed a back up player who gets one of the additional medals due to his contributions during the season prior. Furthermore, if Real Madrid specify on their website he was a winner on the day, that most likely gives him one of the 40 medals and makes the 2016 Super cup a trophy winning game for Cristiano. Cltjames (talk) 20:11, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Ronaldo was not part of the Real Madrid squad submitted to UEFA for the 2016 Super Cup. This has been established on this talk page several times over the last five years. Please look back through the archive. – PeeJay 21:33, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I agree with you, Cltjames. In the case of PeeJay, there is no point in "ending an argument" when you run out of arguments other than repeating the fact that the player did not play the final match. I’m sorry.–Judasly(talk) 16:39, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Yes thanks, the fact stands the WP:RS - Real Madrid Ronaldo page specifies he was given a medal for this game, and sorry PeeJay but Ronaldo was a part of the UEFA squad, it is not a game squad which decides the medals, it's the season squad, and the reference is written in the link, Ronaldo was credited with the Super cup 2016 medal.Cltjames (talk) 21:41, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but you're wrong. There are links provided in previous discussions that show Ronaldo was not included in Real Madrid's squad for the 2016 Super Cup. It is not my responsibility to dredge them up for you. – PeeJay 21:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
But I wonder, if it was not included why the title appears on the official website of Real Madrid? You contradict yourself. –Judasly(talk) 16:48, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Hmmmm, I wonder why Real Madrid might want to blow smoke up the arse of their greatest ever player... He didn't win that title, no matter how much Real Madrid might want to claim he did. – PeeJay 21:54, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I am not wrong in the fact he was given a medal and Is honoured for his contributions to the 2016 Real Madrid UEFA squad. But this discussion comes down to style, and there is no right or wrong. It is correct to say with reference Ronaldo gained a medal for the 2016 Super cup which makes it +1 medal in the trophy cabinet. However the debate is to whether he will be honoured with +1 trophy on this article list. In general you have to go with consensus, I'll reference the Messi article as doing the article correctly with a note explaining he wasn't in the squad, that is perfect and is what is expected on the Ronaldo article too. I'm afraid this is consensus and we might have a flaw here. Cltjames (talk) 21:51, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Who says Ronaldo got a medal for the 2016 Super Cup? There is no source that says that. Real Madrid may have been given 40 medals, but you don't know for sure whether he was given one, and regardless, receiving a medal doesn't necessarily mean he won the competition. What people do in other articles is irrelevant. – PeeJay 21:54, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
The link to the Ronaldo Real Madrid page has been posted twice in this sub section (if you bothered to read), and if you do the math, he didn't participate in the 2018 Super cup (which Real lost anyway), so your denying the Real Madrid website as a WP:Reliable Source. The webpage specifies 4 Champions league wins, 3 super cups. The 2016 Super cup is referenced and this article is ignoring a plain fact. Please fix it, end of discussion. Cltjames (talk) 21:58, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I read it, I saw it. What is it you think I'm missing here? – PeeJay 22:06, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
This shows two main things, your inability to reach consensus and debate with arguments, and the impartiality in the articles when you mention that what other articles do is irrelevant. –Judasly(talk) 17:00, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
No, this shows one main thing: we have discussed this several times over the last few years and every time we have correctly realised that Ronaldo wasn't in the squad for the 2016 Super Cup and shouldn't be credited with that title. – PeeJay 22:06, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
You sarcastically ask what it is your missing... Like I said, I've offered my opinion and consensus rules apply on Wikipedia, this should be escalated to an independent discussion. Cltjames (talk) 22:08, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
We've had the discussions! I'm sorry you weren't there, but the discussions have been had. You haven't presented any new evidence. It's all been seen before. Anyway, here is the UEFA squad list for the 2016 Super Cup, archived from five days after the match. Ronaldo isn't listed. At all. Now will you please drop this? – PeeJay 22:11, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I can, but I'm looking into escalating this, and asking the question about Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo webpage.... Does it not specify his 3 Super cup medals? So, in terms of evidence, the source has been given and you haven't been able to deal with the reference correctly, actually! Cltjames (talk) 22:13, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
But does the fact that it has been discussed on previous occasions mean that it cannot do so in the future? And that if a new consensus is reached, the information cannot be modified? –Judasly(talk) 17:15, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
The only way a new consensus would be reached is if new evidence were presented. None has been. – PeeJay 22:20, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I understand, I can add this. [13]Judasly(talk) 17:29, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I have never seen that source before, but that would be satisfactory. I note that there's no equivalent page in English though (not that there needs to be, but having worked for UEFA, I know their English-language site is a bit more journalistically sound). I would say, however, that we should still not list the 2016 Super Cup, and only mention in a note that some sources consider Ronaldo to have won three Super Cups despite not having been in the country for one of them. – PeeJay 22:47, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Actually, I don’t think that’s a bad idea. I explain that in other Wikipedias as in Spanish mentions the titles of the player under reliable sources, I think a good way to do it would be to leave it as it is but I propose this:
Honours
Manchester United
  • Premier League: 2006–07, 2007–08, 2008–09
  • FA Cup: 2003–04
  • Football League Cup: 2005–06, 2008–09
  • FA Community Shield: 2007, 2008[a]
  • UEFA Champions League: 2007–08
  • FIFA Club World Cup: 2008

Real Madrid

Real Madrid
  • La Liga: 2011–12, 2016–17
  • Copa del Rey: 2010–11, 2013–14
  • Supercopa de España: 2012, 2017
  • UEFA Champions League: 2013–14, 2015–16, 2016–17, 2017–18
  • UEFA Super Cup: 2014, 2016[b], 2017
  • FIFA Club World Cup: 2014, 2016, 2017

Judasly(talk) 18:18, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Considering we don't have a source that says he won two Community Shields, and we have one that explicitly says he shouldn't be considered to have won the 2016 Super Cup, I think it would be better to leave them out and add a note saying something like, "Some sources also credit Ronaldo with the 2016 UEFA Super Cup, although even the competition's organiser has conflicting opinions on this." – PeeJay 00:35, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
In fact, I have already shown that there are sources that mention those titles. On the other hand, I consider that I am falling into assumptions when saying that the Real Madrid website is impartial because it "exalts its players". As I argued in another discussion, what you say should: be demonstrated with reliable sources that effectively demonstrate that impartiality, and on the other hand, what you claim may be against you as any club praises its players, such as El Barça with Messi for example, so I don’t consider it a valid argument to rule out those sources. –Judasly(talk) 20:14, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I add these two sources to the discussion: [14][15]Judasly(talk) 21:08, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
That Gazzetta article specifically mentions those two trophies as not having been won by Ronaldo, it's just their opinion that says he should be assigned them. And again, that UEFA link is fine, but it is contradicted by the fact that Ronaldo was not in the squad for the 2016 Super Cup. – PeeJay 14:55, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
@PeeJay:, And in fact it is not contradicted, because we return to the initial approach: despite not having played the decisive games, Ronaldo was part of the team regardless of whether he was called or not, is a unit. – Judasly (talk) 12:28, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
Furthermore, here is an archived version of Cristiano Ronaldo's own website from April 2017 (link). As you can see, the 2014 Super Cup is listed but not the 2016 Super Cup. They even added the Club World Cup, Ballon d'Or and FIFA Men's Player of the Year awards he won after the Super Cup, but they didn't add the Super Cup. Why do you think that might be? – PeeJay 15:04, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
@PeeJay:, It may be true, but over time the information is updated and more things are added. Please don’t compare a player’s page to UEFA’s... [16][17]Judasly (talk) 12:16, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
Note - This page, which deals with Ronaldo's claim to the 2016–17 UEFA Men's Player of the Year award, specifically excludes the 2016 Super Cup as one of his honours for the year. Just throwing it out there. – PeeJay 23:07, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I see you are refusing to acknowledge the Real Madrid website reference, which specifically is the only reference to go by (WP:RS), so I have escalated the matter to an independent inquiry, you can see the complaint here : Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard#Cristiano Ronaldo 2016 UEFA Super Cup & 2008 community shield Cltjames (talk) 22:31, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm not refusing to acknowledge it, I've said repeatedly that the Real Madrid website has a vested interest in crediting its players with as many honours as possible, and therefore should not be considered a reliable source on the matter. – PeeJay 22:36, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
@PeeJay:, your saying Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard is the incorrect article page, then when is the correct page ?? Cltjames (talk) 23:16, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I would like to make an analogy as an example; if someone achieves an honorary degree in university without studying the course would they then be a graduate? The comparison is that Ronaldo didn't play in the 2016 Super cup, however he has been honoured by Real Madrid on their website as a recipient on the winning side, making it an honours surely ? Cltjames (talk) 18:05, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
Or another. Imagine that you are a cook on the payroll of a renowned restaurant that is participating to win a Michelin star. Suddenly on the day of the award, an external factor prevents you from taking part in the final award ceremony and you do not appear in the photograph of the event in question along with the rest of the team. So that doesn’t make you worthy of the award that you and your co-workers helped get? – Judasly (talk) 13:36, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

There was a discussion here about those kind of honours. Kante4 (talk) 20:05, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

I'm going to repeat the same thing I said in the Gareth Bale talk; this discussion shouldn't be used as a voting system, this is fact based and dependant on who was awarded medals for the game and honoured with a trophy, it is not uncommon in UEFA for a player to get a medal despite not playing the game, which brings me back to the Real Madrid website, which is the reliable source for this topic of discussion, this is WP:RS issue now. Cltjames (talk) 20:33, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
@Cltjames: As no conflict of interest has been alleged COIN is not the correct venue. Bias or POV is not COI. This talk page is a correct venue. CR7 goals for Sporting

I see in Messi's and Haaland's page editors including goals they scored for the juniors teams of their youth club in a clear attempt to inflate their statistics (it's not like we were born yesterday). In that case why not include Ronaldo's goals for Sporting's junior team in the 2001/2002 season? He scored 14 goals in 21 games as far as I can dig up. Surely we should be fair and include that or does that only apply to Messi? 79.169.162.245 (talk) 11:24, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Order of his accomplishments

Now that Cristiano has officially beaten the record of most goals in football history according to FIFA, i think you should put "the best goalscorer of all time according to FIFA" above all his other achievements. 46.211.6.39 (talk) 22:29, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

"Best" is a subjective measure (e.g. how hard were the teams he scored against, how much support did he have from his teammates, how many goals scored per game, etc.), and FIFA does not keep official records per https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/ronaldo-lays-claim-all-time-leading-scorer-record-807-goals-2022-03-12/. In fact, some argue that Bican had a total of 821 goals scored, which would place Ronaldo behind him. What we can say is "By some measures, Ronaldo holds the record for most goals scored in Men's professional football". --Ahecht (TALK

"Often considered the best player in the world..."

In summary: this clause should be removed and it makes the article look outdated; I wouldn't recommend anyone learn about football by referring to a page that lazily refers to Ronaldo in such a way.

For as long as I've used Wikipedia to read about sports, I've enjoyed and appreciated editorial color on an athlete's perception (it's particularly wonderful when learning about sports and cultures I'm unfamiliar with.) And how incredible is it that for 15 years now, the words "often considered the best player in the world" have lain unedited on Ronaldo's (and Messi's) pages?

That said, it's now 2022. Ronaldo is 37, and even though they may be wrong, some wonder whether United are even better off with him. I hate phrasing statements like this, but bluntly, no one would say Ronaldo is the best player in the world right now. (With Messi's form, they may not even say it about him.)

I'd humbly suggest it's time to take that clause out of this article and leave it *only* "Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Ronaldo has won five Ballon d'Or..." Quite frankly, leaving it up just makes this article feel outdated and out of touch with football.

In case it's a point of contention - at this point in time, there's probably no one who can definitively make a claim to that type of clause the way Messi and Ronaldo have for so long. Messi... maybe, and in a year, a handful of other candidates. But there obviously doesn't have to be someone "considered the best player in the world." Many other pages for athletes in other sports don't have such clauses - though football is obviously quite global and actually has an award / widely discussed concept for "world's best." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 136.30.0.32 (talk) 02:31, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

He's still often considered the best player itw, even if its probably not true anymore. Recently literally heard a reporter call him that after the Tottenham game. FMSky (talk) 07:43, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Ronaldo (and Messi) are considered the best players in the world. It’s not even close. When/if a player comes close to reaching their accolades or prestige, then it could be a discussion. Just because Messi or Ronaldo have a bad season or decline doesn’t detract from the fact that they are rated in class of their own by many sports journalists. The title “best player” is a soft qualifier and doesn’t have to mean “best player this season”. It’s used in many, many sports articles by the way. When they retire they are still going to be considered the best players to have played this game until proven otherwise. When a player outside of them scores 750+ goals, wins 5-8 ballon d’ors, and 4+ champions league + international trophies not to mention club records then it could be a discussion. This is many many journalists and experts the world over saying this not just fans. If a fan wants to say their own personal favorite is the best that’s fine but that’s not corroborated by the overwhelming majority of commentators and analysts. 71.9.141.71 (talk) 02:14, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
