I think the reference to pop music in the 80s should be toned down as it appears to be a marketing gimmick to include the names of people's favourite bands and obtain credit for "inventing" a new trend rather than an objective assessment of the phenomenon as such. The term crossover was certainly being used in the jazz world in 1975 and I would hazard a guess it was being used to refer to Miles Davis before that and Weather Report, etc. but I have no documentation to back it up. 83.191.63.182 19:45, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I think the bands listed here are out of sequence. For instance, DRI pre-dated both Slayer and Metallica by a good 5 years, at a time when the term "crossover" hadn't yet been widely applied to hardcore/metal blending. Slayer in particular were hugely influenced by DRI, Minor Threat, and other fast hardcore bands, and are usually cited as the classic example of a crossover band. Therefore, it's incorrect to say they are a metal band whose sound "crossover" bands combined with hardcore influences to create the crossover genre. Metallica were also heavily influenced by such punk/hardcore groups as Discharge, Motorhead, and the Misfits, although their status as a crossover band is more dubious.

Top artists and albums

I really don't like the existence of this section. I think it is just asking for promotion of one's own favorite group that could be considered crossover. Any reliable, objective basis for determining "top" or "best" would be possible to articulate in more specific, objective terms, such as album sales or whatnot. I'm thinking I will be bold and remove this section in a day or two unless someone objects. -GlamdringCookies 17:15, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

'How Do I Live' in Intro paragraphs

If this is to be the one big example in the opening paragraphs, the paragraph needs to explain exactly what it has crossed over from and to, bearing in mind that the intro has already stated that going from a specialist chart into a pop chart is not really crossing over. Opening sentence

I don't think it is correct to start this article with charts. Here are some of definitions for the word "crossover" applied for music:

A musician, a band, a group, an ensamble, an orchestra can broaden his audience for example at concerts, shows, and festivals, but not in the charts. I do not think it is fair to start the article in the way it is right now.

I have to agree with the above. A group or singer the does music in multiple genres could be considered a crossover act even if they don't find chart success in every musical genre they dabble in. For example, Frank Zappa was a very eclectic musician but did not find chart success in all genres he dabbled in. He could be referred to as a crossover artists in the sense of being eclectic but not in the sense of having had hits on multiple charts. Basically, a crossover musical artist/band could be:
a) A band or artist that has at least one hit that has appeared on several different distinctly different musical genre charts, either at the same time or at different times.
b) A band or artist that has performed songs/musical pieces that are of several different genres (examples: Frank Zappa, Tom Weights, Billy Joel, Jerry Lee Lewis).
c) A band or artist who appeals to fans of several distinct genres (i.e. A country artist that has a significant number of rock fans), regardless of whether their music fits multiple genres or charts on multiple charts, if charting at all.
A crossover hit on the other hand is a song that charts on two different musical genre charts (example: 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton which charts both on the country and pop charts at the same time). Some artists/groups with a crossover hit due not qualify as crossover bands because the song in question was a one-off in it's genre.
What we really need is to cover both crossover artists/bands and crossover hits in the intro with all three senses of the term "crossover artists/band" described. --Cab88 (talk) 12:08, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
There reads: If the second chart is a record chart, such as a "Hot 100" list, the work is not a crossover since the pop charts only track popularity and do not constitute a separate genre.
