The mention of north-central Arizona appears to be correct. Found one that was roadkill on Arizona SR-88 (renumbered as 188 since) and it had the gray background, same color as the chip seal the highway department had laid on the road some months before. The markings were closer to the 'diamonds' of the western diamondback but unlike those were more disjunct from each other.
