Alcibiades as Socrates' most brilliant student

edit

I take issue with the statement, "Plato presents Alcibiades as Socrates' most brilliant student." In my opinion, Plato presents Alcibiades as a profligate and a hedonist. While Socrates is attracted to Alcibiades, I'm not sure he would say that Alcibiades is his most brilliant student. Compare him with someone like Theatetus. Therefore I'm changing the wording of the sentence. --Erickroh 02:55, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nothing about Alcibiades in Thucydides, surely a major primary source?

Alcibiades a contemporary of Pericles?

edit

Regarding the reference to Chavarria's The Eye of Cybele -- I haven't read the novel, but it unless it's a purposefully anachronistic and historically inaccurate novel , there's something wrong with the reference. Pericles' and Alcibiades' careers did not overlap; when Pericles died in 429 BC, Alcibiades was only 21 years old, not yet a "great general". Pericles did have a contemporary named Alcibiades, who was the grandfather of Alcibiades son of Cleinas, the great general -- perhaps this is the Alcibiades in the novel?--DavidSTaylor (talk) 21:12, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alcibiades in art

edit

There is a sentence in the leading article on Alcibiades which states that "Alcibiades has been depicted regularly in art, both in Medieval and Renaissance works", and there are two images on the Cultural depictions page which bear testimony to there being some art which depicts him. I have copied the said sentence into this article, but it needs more information to substantiate it and to draw together how he has been represented artistically over time. Can anyone help with this?
