When should we add the US Presidential Campaign Race?

I was just wondering when we should add the US Presidential Campaign Race to the ongoing events area. Seeing as how it's more active and influential than the Same-sex marriage controversy (which has died down a bit), I would be in favor of adding it immediately. However, under the "influential and immediate" standard, we would have added it a few months back. Which is why I'm bothering to ask here. Any opinions?--Gregb 21:31, 11 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Whoops, I looked right below it and saw the special space for prez elections. I guess, my new question is, does the actual campaigning deserve inclusion (and replication) as an ongoing event? *smacks self on head*--Gregb 21:31, 11 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Speaking of presidential elections, keep in mind that according to Bertrand de Jouvenal, "A society of sheep must in time beget a government of wolves."

Political Debates

Is it really good to have the Same-Sex Marriage Debate in the USA listed as an ongoing event? Of course it is taking place right now and it's a hot topic in the USA, but if this stays in, basically every important political debate of every nation can be added, not? Unlike for example the U.S. presidential election this debate will have zero influence outside of the USA.

• the debate is going on in Canada and some other countries. It is a debate with a potential for lasting worldwide effects, but then again so is the "debate" on stem cell research, and WMD proliferation, and role of the UN, and on what to do about the AIDS pandemic. These are just sort of Zeitgeist events. Part of me says that part of the reason people read and update the Current events page is to make sense of the bigger picture, so these sorts of "news" items shouldn't be strictly verboten. User:MPS
