Strangites.
editThe Strangite branch still teaches plural marriage. [1] 66.191.19.217 (talk) 20:26, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
- Can you add details to the article? I don't know much about the Strangite branch. I added a header with an expand tag. --Descartes1979 (talk) 20:56, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding the heading. There isn't a lot information about Strangite plural marriage, but I have added some key information per your request. There is a book written about James Strang that might contain more detailed information. Curiously, the official church site says "there are no known cases of polygamy currently in the church.¨ I can´t Wikiprove it at the present, but I don´t believe that is completely accurate. Perhaps the key word there is ¨known.¨ 66.191.19.217 (talk) 22:01, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
- IIRC, one of the source of information for Richard Abanes' book One Nation Under Gods is/was a contemporary Strangite engaged in plural marriage. If the information can be dug up, it might be of interest. Surv1v4l1st (talk) 23:50, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Teaching of Plural Marriage in the modern Church
editThe text stated that plural marriage is still taught in the curriculum of the Sunday School, and a reference to that lesson is provided. However, when you go to the lesson, it is clear that the only mention of plural marriage is in the additional information section, and is provided specifically for dealing with questions that might be asked about plural marriage. The manual emphasises that plural marriage is not to be the focus of the lesson and provides a quote from the Book of Mormon that stipulates one husband-one wife, and a quote from Gordon B Hinckley that rejects plural marriage categorically: '“This Church has nothing whatever to do with those practicing polygamy. They are not members of this Church. … If any of our members are found to be practicing plural marriage, they are excommunicated, the most serious penalty the Church can impose. Not only are those so involved in direct violation of the civil law, they are in violation of the law of this Church” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1998, 92; or Ensign, Nov. 1998, 71). As a result, it seems rather inaccurate to say that 'it is taught as part of the Sunday School curriculum in the modern church'. Iain1917 (talk) 12:16, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Polygamy not based on religion
editCan somone add info on polygamy that is not religiously based and not so focused on sects of LDS? I find the topic interesting but not all polygamy is based on religion. This article also does not touch on polyandry. It would be nice to be more inclusive Pamnjay (talk) 20:47, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
