April, 2008 cleanup

edit

Greetings editors!

I just cleaned up this article a bit. Specifically I took out a lot of flowery language that is inappropriate for an encyclopedia article, and I removed a lot of non-notbale staff and students (current and former. I also took out some references to "current activities that were current a year or two ago. In general, Wikipedia is not a place for listing these things.

Before editing, take a moment to check out WP:SCH#WNTI. This is an entry on the WikiSchools Project page highlighting what not to include in school articles. Check it out, but allow me to summarize:

1. These articles are not home pages. Do not include current "goings on", unless they are notable for all time. The football team winning regionals is not notable in the long run. The band winning a state competition is notable.

2. Do not include the names of staff and students, unless they are notable for something beyond being affiliated with the school. The person who hits the winning home run to win the state championship is not notable. A teacher winning a national award is notable.

3. Alumni are generally notable if they can have an article about them written here at Wikipedia. Others are usually not notable enough to fulfill the requirements of WP:N.

3. To avoid having people swoop in and delete your edits, always include a properly cited reference. References need to be reliable, third party, neutral sources that can be checked. With some exceptions, the school's web page is not acceptable as a neutral source.

Best of luck editing! LonelyBeacon (talk) 19:49, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proper way to site references

edit

I was interested in the notable alumni section and noticed they were all sports or porn related. I dont lnow why that struck me as funny bit it brought a visual to mind of a person with those singular interests starting this section. Im sure There are a number of notable alumni but I don't know them all. The one I do know is Richard J Porter. I attempted to add him to the list but I am unsure how to best approach this. In adding him I was saddened to learn he died recently. I found a blog for western stars who have left us. It does a wonderful job memorializing him and I'd like to site it with a link as well as the entry in IMDB. Im a little confused as to what constitutes a reference and what can be linked directly from the entry itself. There are several entries that do it either way so I'm not sure of which is best. right now i have the imdb link on the same line as the entry but it feels wrong. I will be happy to create a wiki page for him but I want to make sure is doing this the right way. Any advice is appreciated even if its just an RTFM. Orphaned references in Cy-Fair High School

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Cy-Fair High School's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "NCES":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 05:15, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
