Table changes / Genres
editI've changed the 'Main writer' column to 'Creators' and added all creators credited on the individual book covers to each listing, as I feel just listing the writers is arbitrary. I've added nowrap to ISBNs and changed the width to 60%, as I feel that tables are too stretched across the screen while being empty, and I think this should also be applied to DC Finest. Feel free to change this back if anyone disagrees though.
In 'Upcoming releases', I've removed the 'Issues collected' column, as I think the table should just list the upcoming titles and they are fully listed above with what they collect. Again, feel free to change this back.
One major suggestion I have is to either merge all the volumes into a single table, as as of now there are few volumes, making the ToC much more busy-looking that the actual page is, and the table wouldn't that unwieldy to add for now, or, I also add that unlike with the DC Finest line, DC Compacts are not as officially "defined" by characters/teams than by genre, at least; all the books on this line feature a small line on the cover with which genre they belong to: 'Thriller' (e.g. Court of Owls), 'Fantasy' (All-Star Superman), 'Science Fiction' (Far Sector), 'Mystery' (Hush), 'Adventure' (Gotham City Sirens) and 'Horror' (DCeased). I feel as this should be added somewhere on the tables or maybe change the structure of the page so that instead of having 'Batman', 'Catwoman', 'Superman', etc. the volumes are grouped by the officially defined genre. - Hey!
- I think you’re right on the upcoming section. Nice work.
- With the single table suggestion… at this exact moment, you’re also probably right - but I think the current layout has a degree of future-proofing to it. Same with Finest. Before long, there will be a lot of these books - like the Epics, like the omnibuses - and then they’ll end up needing to be separated again.
- For the other point, you could make the tables wider again - but have writer/artist as two cols, instead of the single ‘creators’? And also maybe add the genre to the column, as you suggest? It’s probably worth trying, just to see how it looks? It might be fine. If not, it can always be reverted.
- The other issue to consider with width and tables is that they don’t always appear the same on different platforms. If you’re on desktop, it’s worth seeing how they appear in the app, and vice-versa.
- Either way, welcome back. It’s great to have someone else contributing. Peterspeterson (talk) 12:58, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've reverted to the original width and added the 'Genre' column as well as separated 'Creators' into 'Writers' and 'Artists'.
- I still think the main structure of the page should be changed to something else as, for example, the tables for 'Far Sector', 'Kingdom Come' and 'Watchmen' are not going to have any more books added to them since there aren't any more uncollected issues in their respective series. Grouping the volumes by the genre would be, I believe, much better, since DC itself assigned them to each Compact. Vanto7 (talk) 14:32, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- Like the new tables.
- It’s a good point re: Far Sector, Kingdom Come, Watchmen.
- You could maybe group them together onto a “miniseries” table? Always easy to revert if it doesn’t work.
- On the genre grouping, I think the issue is that it would split - even now - the Batman books. Bearing in mind there’ll be more to come and it would end up splitting other characters in future. How are people more likely to collect, or read? Via character, or via genre? I’d argue someone would be more likely to be interested in every Batman book, however many that ends up being, compared to every ‘Adventure’ book, for instance. - Hmm, I'm not sure either way. I think we should leave as it is and wait for more volumes to be released/announced, maybe by then a better way to organize will appear. I see that with the American Vampire volume DC may also print more non-DC universe books, making those a potential sub-heading in the future. Vanto7 (talk) 12:18, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Agree on that. Page looks good for now, at least until more announcements. You / I / anyone can discuss things further here as and when. Great work on all the edits. Peterspeterson (talk) 15:08, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
