Creation of article

edit

I created this article as an extension of the DVD article, with the idea of putting a comparison table of the different formats. I am not completely sure how to make tables, so any help is welcome. I would like to better understand what is a user supposed to use when picking a DVD format.--AAAAA 23:04, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Standards

edit

All these articles suggest that the standard is set by the dvd forum. But can one claim that as long as there are competing standards? For example, the DVD+R article states that the DVD Forum claims that the DVD+R format is not an official DVD format. But the inverse is not claimed at the dvd-r format article. In other words, Wikipedia is choosing sides in a commercial dispute, which is even worse than POV. Or is there some way in which it can be claimed that the DVD forum sets the official standards? And who determines that then? DirkvdM 09:07, 13 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, there is no way to say who sets the official standard. The DVD forum merely notes that DVD+R and DVD+RW, as well as the DVD+VR recording format are not endorsed by the DVD forum. Both formats exist in the market and both are based on different sets of IPR and patents.
For PC recording drives one hardly can speak of a format war anymore. Almost all drives currently in the market support both formats. For video recording prodcts, there isn't really a war to speak off. All recorders in the market play back DVD Video, and there hardly is a real war between DVD+VR and DVD-VR from the market point of view, not like there was for VHS and Betamax anyway. Shelve-space for DVD media seems to be less of an issue than for rental-tapes.
IMHO the entire applicaion formats section should be re-written to be more up to date, and more correct.Pieter-Bas 23:15, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Added back an old paragraph about the DVD+ formats. 81.107.43.7 05:29, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The text of this article could benefit from some TLC from an English-language geek. I'd do it myself but I'm a tad tired at the moment. (I come to Wikipedia to find out the byte and sector capacities of the various DVD formats, and what happens? I start copyediting. What's amusing is that this is NORMAL for me. Where but Wikipedia do you come to read and end up writing? :) ) Rosuav (talk) 14:27, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Application Formats -- fix or scrap

edit

The Application Formats section of this article appears to be in a dire situation. It may be a good idea to split off this particular section as it seems like it was written in a "stream of consciousness" manner, which should allow the contents to be refocused on an actual topic related to "application formats".

As it is, I don't see anything particularly important in this section, and if I were a totalitarian editor, I'd just delete the whole thing. 70.91.178.185 (talk) 13:28, 23 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, i for one found this section very interesting (it was all new to me). However, i could not understand the first sentence of the first topic (VR Mode) due to the use of forward slashes (it's not clear if the slashes separate words or phrases). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.123.168.38 (talk) 03:30, 27 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
