editOn close inspection, the bulk of the article seems to be lifted word for word from Dale Roberts' profile page on the Rushden & Diamonds website. Brad78 (talk) 23:59, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- You're right. I'll try to rewrite it. Badmotorfinger (talk) 00:02, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
The case against deletion
editLook, I know Roberts never played a first-team game in The Football League, and that the Conference isn't considered a fully-professional (even though all but a handful of the clubs are full-time professional) and therefore fails WP:ATHLETE. Nevertheless, Roberts played six times for England C and was clearly regarded as one of the top players in the league. Furthermore, plenty of reliable sources exist about him, and although I hate resorting to the WP:OTHERSTUFF argument, there are several articles about other non-league players who have never played above the Conference. Richard Brodie is one, Scott Garner another, Marc Burrows (who never even played at Conference level) a third. Badmotorfinger (talk) 00:28, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'm inclined to agree that there is significant coverage of Roberts for a variety of reasons and would (just) argue on the side that he passed WP:GNG. Brad78 (talk) 00:35, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- England C might not nominally pass WP:NOTAB, but there seems sufficent secondary sources to justify inclusion before his sudden and tragic death. I'd support inclusion. Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 00:48, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, his tragic death means he will be remembered in Rushden's history. This is a club that four years ago would have had all of their first team players unquestionably kept according to the guidelines. Perhaps crystal balling but if Rushden achieved promotion this season then Roberts would almost certainly have been a Football League player this time next year. Since the afD went through he has had two seasons as the club's top keeper, played for England C, and of course has died, which is exceptionally rare for a professional football player. Also the afD was far from unanimous back then.--EchetusXe 00:49, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Relations
editWas this Dale Roberts any relation to the also deceased Dale Roberts who was once a player and coach at Ipswich Town? Sir Stanley User talk:Sir Stanley 18:34, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- I doubt it. I'm sure I (or any other editor, for that matter) would have read it otherwise. And although they were both born near each other (Newcastle & Co. Durham), the senior one died in Ipswich, a distance away from the birthplace of the junior. —Half Price 18:49, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- In fact, they definitely aren't related as this BBC article mentions "Isabelle and George Roberts" as his parents. Add to that the fact that Dale Roberts (footballer born 1956) died in 2003, I think we can close the case. —Half Price 18:51, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
