Sidekick ID/Sidekick X Rumors

edit

I don't think rumors need to be in a Wikipedia article. Articles are suppose to be facts not second rate rumors. AJ 02:49, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hiptop/Sidekick 4

edit

There is no evidence to back up that a hiptop/sidekick 4 is going to be released this year. We need a source. This can not be true since the D-Wade Sidekick just came out last Tuesday anyway. Stop reposting rumors: Someone keeps putting this in the article "This latest version is currently in development and should be around or smaller than the current hiptop. It is rumored to have a QXVGA screen, 2+ megapixel camera with video capability, and a capability for bigger memorycard to be put into it. It will be coming out either around Q2-Q3 OF 2007 or Q2-Q3 2008." Again stop posting rumors! AJ 12:05, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sidekick 2008 is confirmed for July 30th, 2008. Split / Revision proposal 2

edit

I'm going to layout a full set of suggested changes for updating this page, including new wpd pages. Anyone else paying enough attention to get involved?

I'd like to help out with the changes. Also I think the differences between the original hiptop (b&w and color) and the hiptop2 merit a new article for the hiptop2. Which means taking off the picture here and getting a good picture of the original. --Bmalicoat 22:01, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Split / Revision proposal

edit

I propose that this page be either split into new pages reflecting the product revisions or split into section detailing strengths and weaknesses of each version.

No mention is made of differences in versions. Fido, and I assume other carriers, do not yet have 2.3, and thus have no JavaScript in their browsers, among other things. Fido also does not make Yahoo! IM available. 24.235.99.74 16:29, 16 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Attention flag

edit

I marked this with attention because it uses second person, and more importantly, it reads like a brochure. Wikipedia is not meant to sell a product, it's meant to describe things. This article is full of salesspeak/fanlove. I believe the original author of the article posted it to both everything2 and wikipedia at about the same time. I don't know if Everything2's guidelines consider this kosher, but this article is in need of a deep rewrite here. --Improv 15:26, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Relaibility issues

edit

To make this article even-handed, some mention must be made of reliability issues, especially with the Sidekick I.

Remove Data Stored on Remote Server Error

edit

This is no longer a problem with the Sidekick 2. Even in a Area with out Coverage you have access to all you User personal Data. All Task, Calendar items, Telephone Number, Etc are locally Stored. If you turn off your Wireless service you can see that you still have access to your Data.

Remove Data Stored on Remote Server Error (Correction)

edit

I wrote this to respond to the post above. As of the hiptop v2.3 update, data like (contacts and notes) are stored on the remote server.

Merger with Sidekick II

edit

I've proposed merging Sidekick II into this article. It's just a stub, and furthermore, the Sidekick II is just T-Mobile's branding of the Hiptop2. -- Hawaiian717 02:50, 14 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think that's a fine idea. Just redirect it to Danger Hiptop ? -- BillWeiss | Talk 13:33, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Big change

edit

I was bold. I removed a lot of the more marketing-seeming content, though I tried to keep any informational content. Differences between the 1 and 2 are now discussed. I reworded some of the "Use By the Hearing-impared" section for grammar, readability and personal preference. Reworded the first bullet in Press to be more clear.

I don't think that this is enough to remove the cleanup tag, but it's a start. Please let me know (here or via my user page) if you disagree with me on some of this.

"Advertisement" press

edit

Since someone's reverted this change, I'll just ask everyone who cares about the topic: should this article include some of the positive press of the Sidekick? If so, should it be worded differently from what it is now?

I'm going to make what seems like a reasonable edit to make this less of an advertisement. I would appreciate comments. -- BillWeiss | Talk 12:55, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Sidekick" vs "Hiptop"

edit

Please do not change the information in this article to rename the product the Sidekick. The 'Sidekick' is a T-Mobile branded version of the 'HipTop' made by Danger. It is ONLY known as Sidekick when sold through T-Mobile. All other phone providers as well as the manufacturer, Danger, refer to it as the 'Hiptop'.
Also, please do not state information about "Upcoming" products until they are publically available and confirmed. The Hiptop3/Sidekick3 has not been officially announced, nor can any of the details about this product be confirmed at this time. ZyphBear 13:03, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

First of all, good edit!
That being said, I think that it should be allowable to mention the upcoming Hiptop 3, as long as the mention is labeled as speculation and/or hearsay. There's something to be said for rumors.
-- BillWeiss | Talk 17:44, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
172.162.111.180 Made some great edits adding a lot of new verifiable information about the Hiptop 3, but also changed a lot of references to Hiptop back to Sidekick or added references suggesting that "Sidekick" is the correct name (e.g. changing ===Hiptop 2=== to ===Sidekick 2 (Hiptop 2)===.
If you wish to make a case for giving preference to T-Mobile's brand over the manufacturer's brand, why not explain it here so that others don't have to keep reverting each other's edits? Jzerocsk 17:25, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
It has been mentioned many times before, Wikipedia is not a Crystal Ball. Information that isn't verifiable through stated reliable sources should not be published. Technically, No one has announced the Hiptop3/Sidekick3 at all. Not Danger, not T-Mobile, not any of the other carriers. Anything released until then is all rumors and heresay, which it has been mentioned very specifically doesn't belong on Wikipedia. Once any official details are released, I think it would be good to have a table of features that are covered in all the models.
And Technically, there are NOT 4 versions of the Hiptop, there are (currently) 2 with a 3rd "Possibly" being on the way. The Hiptop 1 was released with a B&W then a Color Screen, still considered the same model, just like the 4G iPod then the "4G iPod with color screen", none of the features changed past the new screen.ZyphBear 20:02, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Considering that the color hiptop is a different hardware build and runs a significant revision of the OS (OS1.3 was *massively* overhauled for color support and a bunch of related changes), I'd certainly consider the grayscale and color "original" hiptops distinct products. We certainly did inside the company. Another fun fact: the color hiptop ran at 48MHz, the grayscale one at 24MHz.

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.81.243.122 (talk) 16:13, 22 December 2006 (UTC).Reply

As of 6/20/2006, Sidekick 3 is officially announced by Danger and reviewers such as Gizmodo have now been permitted to put up pictures and information. All of the features attributed to the SK3 can be easily verified at this point - it's no longer speculation. It's interesting to note that based on what Danger has on their site, the actual name of the 3rd-gen device is actually "Sidekick 3."
Anyway, truth be told, I didn't want to simply criticize 172.162.111.180 for the Hiptop->Sidekick edits without at least acknowledging that he also added some good information, too. Jzerocsk 20:32, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
We are speaking about the little "picture" on Danger's site as the "official annoucement" right? They do technically say to come back on July 10th for the announcement. No specifics are given showing features that are different other than having MSN, MP3 player, the bluetooth and 1.2 megapixel camera. No price point. Not saying if 7/10 is the official release or just announcement. Nor any informaton saying that this version will be exclusive to T-Mobile and not be released around the world (which sounds a little far-fatched.) Nor saying what your pricepoint is if you already have a SK2.
And the review sites always get them early, that's what they do. That's also why their version is called "review units", which means they could be different from the final version. Some press got the Motorola Q almost a year before it was released and changes were made to it many times. They don't have to get "permission" to put up pics. In fact, some have gotten in trouble for releasing info early about a product.
Oh and yea, i made a revision then removed it to not cause another arguement. I'm not saying those edits done by the unregistered user was totally bad, just not to include the Sidekick3 in the information until there is a FINAL version. (now also to make a note, some compaies have had different version of a product based on the provider. After all, MSN has been available overseas for awhile now. (Look at hiptop.com's main story). Photographs of Danger Hiptops

The photographs of the Danger Hiptop that are currently displayed on the article are okay, altough they could look better. Renaming of new sections about future Hiptop Devices

I feel like the majority of this section should go away. The "Tip, Tricks and Hidden Features" section doesn't feel very wikipedia-like. The emoticon section? No. The autotext section doesn't really need 10+ examples, does it?

Fair use rationale for Image:Normal SidekickLX 3.jpg

edit

Image:Normal SidekickLX 3.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Major Changes

edit

I've just gone through the article and made a load of changes, corrected information from personal hands on experience (I own a Hiptop). Replaced most references to Sidekick with Hiptop, except where the T-Mobile branded versions are referenced specifically. Added an image to the slide stub. Basically tried to clean the whole article up a bit after I saw the dismal state it was in when I arrived =P 20:00, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Connectivity outside US

edit

just wonder what functions will available for a unlocked Sidekick outside US. From what i see in the article, the web browser and email client (for send msg) require danger server, so I guess this is a no. How about IM and myspace? Will they work outside US with a third party mobile network operator? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.77.36.49 (talk) 09:41, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unencyclopedic content

edit

I noticed a lot of information in this article that seemed to be unencyclopedic, particularly in the Sidekick (2008) (Danger/Sharp) section. I was bold and removed much from this section, such as prices and a reference to a vendor's website, and cleaned up the informal review-like tone of the section. If this information is really necessary, it should be written in a more formal tone.
I believe editors of this article need to consider what specific information belongs in this article and standardize the information included in each part of the Hardware section. Some of the sections include detailed descriptions of the processor in the device, some exact specifications of the unit's dimensions. If this information is in fact encyclopedic, it should be present for each version of the device and presented in a standardized fashion. If not, it should be removed. Any thoughts?

edit

As a long time Sidekick user and what many would consider to be well-versed in the device, I wonder why sites that are not official T-Mobile sites have been removed from the wikipedia page. I recognize that some links are just pure spam, but I would also argue that some sites are relevant to the topic. One section that I believe was on here long ago was about how the Sidekick community (a developer by the name of AcidAngel) discovered a feature (custom user made themes) in the Sidekick that was not supposed to be accessible. Because this information was leaked out (originally on the http://www.hiptop3.com/forums) and users picked up on it, T-Mobile was forced to not restrict this feature as they had originally planned. They still sell themes through the Catalog, however they have left the ability to load your own custom themes on the 3/LX/Slide/2008. Several sites have sprung up regarding how to do this, as well as offering themes and theme creators (http://www.sk3themes.com was the first and http://www.sklxthemes, http://www.skslidethemes.com, and http://www.sk08themes.com followed). I feel like this is information that is relevant to the history of the Sidekick. Not including it would be right in line with keeping the article as if it were written by T-Mobile, filtering the information that perhaps they don't want totally public. I have not added the sites as this may be a conflict of interest since I built and run these sites. In the past, http://www.hiptop3.com was a reference for various bits of information and rumors. Based on it's history of rumors, many people regard it as a reliable source. FWIW, it is the first result from a Google search of "sidekick" that is not a T-Mobile site or Wikipedia. In addition the various theme sites are also the first results when searching for information on customizing your sidekick and how to do it. I'm not after pagerank or traffic as these sites are generally as high in the search engine results as possible (generally #1) and previous traffic from wikipedia has accounted for approximately less than 0.20% of traffic to hiptop3.com for example. I just feel like this is an area of expertise where I can contribute knowledge and understanding.

I am unable to find when various references to http://www.hiptop3.com and the information on custom themes was edited out. As I said before I did not want to add this info as it may be misunderstood as a conflict of interest. I would be willing to add what I think is relevant and open it up for editing if others agree that this information is useful. Thanks. Edrabbit (talk) 23:43, 19 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Data loss timeline off

edit

The data loss timeline doesn't make much sense. It says:

On October 2, 2009, Microsoft lost the ability to access user data for T-Mobile US Sidekick subscribers temporarily. Subscriber data loss included contacts, notes, calendars and photos. Some data was restored within 14 days of the outage, however most of the data was restored between October 8 and the end of November. Early reports stating T-Mobile and Microsoft had "almost certainly [lost all customer data] as a result of a server failure at Microsoft" proved to be untrue and premature.[3]

Clearly October 8 (I presume the same year since it doesn't give a year) is less than 14 days so saying 'some data was restored within 14 days' and 'most of the data was restored between October 8 and the end of November' is just plain confusing. The other article doesn't help much (although does suggest the October 8 may be a little enthuastic and the only ref in our article seems to suggest the whole thing is a bit ORry.
