Dara Sultanate
editWhy does Sultanate of Dara redirect to here if there's no mention of it? I'm really struggling to place it, List of kingdoms in Africa throughout history#Unplaced or undated kingdoms/sultanates Alexanderkowal (talk) 21:03, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- If you look at the edit history of that redirect, it originally read that Dara was a "Muslim sultanate located in the far south of Ethiopia in modern Sidama Zone, where there is still a woreda that bears the name Dara. Dara was too distant to be threatened by invasion from Abyssinia but it was the first Sultanate to fall to the Oromo migrations."I have no idea whether this is true; I lack access to reliable sources for that part of Ethiopia, although Werner Lange, History of the Southern Gonga (Wiesbaden: Franz Steiner, 1982) might shed light on this. (I looked at this monograph years ago, but did not take any notes.) -- llywrch (talk) 18:24, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Llywrch sorry read something today, Tl;dr There's next to no info on it, although it might be worth mentioning in the article.
- In A Companion to Medieval Ethiopia and Eritrea: Chapter 4-The Sultanates of Medieval Ethiopia (2020) it states
- "Al-ʿUmarī, writing a few decades later, listed six other “Muslim kingdoms” in Ethiopia: Dawāro, ʿArābabni, Hadiyya, Šarḫā, Bāli and Dāra." (In the 13th century, the only one I can't place at all is Sarha)
- "The “seven Muslim kingdoms” were all independent of each other; each paid “a fixed tribute which they bring every year” to the Christian king and “none of them has its own authority unless it is invested by the ruler of ʿAmḥara"
- "Except for Awfāt, the exact location of the other six Islamic “kingdoms” of the fourteenth century has been the subject of much speculation. Ulrich Braukämper collected in the 1970s all attested information on them and found it to be inconclusive regarding their geographical placement.79 But the archeological evidence, noted above, of Islamic settlements south and east of Šäwa already in the late thirteenth century may well correlate with these polities described by al-ʿUmarī a few decades later."
- "As for the political organization of the “seven Muslim kingdoms” of the fourteenth century, we know almost nothing. A little more information is avaialble for the Barr Saʿd al-Dīn, thanks to ʿArab Faqīh’s Futūḥ al-Ḥabaša..." The Sultanates of Medieval Ethiopia (hal.science) pgs 78-80, it continues but not much meaningful info, I can't post the link here but it's ref 223 on List of kingdoms in Africa throughout history
