Historical inaccuracy
editI'm tempted to add something discussing the general historical inaccuracy of the 1610 section. There were very few women in Jamestown (see essay here), and there were certainly no houses as spacious and well-equipped as the one seen in this episode. I'm not certain, but I think that all houses in the Jamestown colony in 1610 would have had dirt floors and most had bare, unplastered walls. The population of Jamestown was devastated in the "Starving Time" (the winter of 1609–1610), with only 60 survivors left by spring. About 150 settlers arrived later, survivors of the wreck of the Sea Venture, but that still leaves a very small population; it's doubtful that an unfamiliar priest would have been able to go about the colony unquestioned. (The palisade of the Jamestown colony was only a quarter of a square mile, and there were no buildings outside the palisade until much later than 1610.) In short, the depiction of the Virginia Colony in this episode is very inaccurate.
The problem is that I'm concerned that pointing this out in the article would amount to original research unless I could find a reliable source making the point. I've seen others mention this on the web (here, for example), but I don't think those quite qualify as reliable sources. However, I know that there's a fairly substantial apparatus of Buffy and Angel criticism. Does anyone know whether any of the published Angel guides mention this historical inaccuracy? Anyone have any other sources we could use to support a note about this? —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 03:05, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
