The below comment was inlined as an XML comment in the article body, where it definitely does not belong. I haven't traced through the history to figure out who added it, and have no opinion on the truth or falsity of the claims. But I put the comment here on talk where editors may find some value in it. Removed text describing Shaw as a billionaire. Although it's true that Fortune estimated Shaw's net worth to be $1.0 billion, it's clear to those who are familiar with the way D.E. Shaw allocates its profits that his actual net worth must be considerably lower. Although Shaw was actively involved in the firm's investment management activities between 1988 and 2001, the vast majority of its profits were earned since that time, when the firm had grown by a factor of about a thousand beyond its original size. Though Shaw still receives an (undisclosed) percentage of the firm's profits, those profits are currently shared with the firm's 27 managing directors, who are now responsible for the management of the firm.
