Lyrics for the Pixies?
editI've got printed in the back of my head, that David Lovering has written (or co-written) a couple of songs for the Pixies. I think "River Euphrates" and "Levitate Me" are at least partially his songs. Could anyone confirm this? - Mickey Macaroni 20:11, 14 May 2007 (CET)
Dispute involving the song "Make Believe"
editI am currently doing a rewrite for the Deborah Gibson article and have to question the relevance of "Make Believe" to the rewrite. From other sources, I am under the impression that Black Francis, at the time he wrote "Make Believe," actually wrote the song to the girlfriend of one of the bandmembers, comparing this girlfriend to Gibson ("Just make believe you're Debbie G"). This leads me to suspect that Gibson was in fact NOT the subject of "Make Believe." Is there any differing opinion that can give me cause not to purge the reference to "Make Believe" from my rewrite of the Deborah Gibson article? - B.C.Schmerker 04:13, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
- From the Complete 'B' Sides liner notes (written by Black Francis): "David Lovering sings lead. He kept us very entertained with this obsession with Debbie Gibson, and that's what this song is about." Straight from the horse mouth there, although I'll try to find a book reference to cite this in both articles. CloudNine 07:20, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Gay?
editDavid Lovering is gay, right? -- AvatarMN 10:23, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Never found any evidence to suggest this. CloudNine 11:01, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, I've taken it for granted for ages... I thought I must've heard it somewhere, maybe several sources, but I guess it was just gaydar. -- AvatarMN 21:18, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Now I remember! The chatter at the begining of "I'm Amazed" on Surfer Rosa. Kim Deal appears to be talking about the low-key way she learned Lovering was gay (into field hockey players). Isn't that his voice responding back to her that he applied for the team? -- AvatarMN 21:30, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- From Surfer Rosa; Deal says there was a teacher "into field hockey players", so Francis (not Lovering) completes her sentence, saying she wanted to join the team because of that. You learn something new everyday :) CloudNine 21:32, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I was just reading that on the Surfer Rosa article and came back to edit my comment only to see you'd already replied. I really thought that was Lovering's voice, and misinterperted the "speaking for Deal" thing. ... Well, anyway, my gaydar still gives me some major blips on Lovering and I coulda sworn it was common knowledge, but I guess I was mistaken and if he's gay he hasn't come out. -- AvatarMN 21:40, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Interesting :) If you do find any written sources, let me know. CloudNine 21:43, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Not gay! I'm a Wikipedian and his ex-wife. Sayin' it just for the record, because clearly my blog is not a reliable source. JSFarman (talk) 03:28, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Cracker?
editHas anyone got access to a reliable source stating Lovering drummed in Cracker? His name is similar to that of the band's frontman, David Lowery, but some sources ([1], [2]) state he drummed live with the band. Any thoughts? CloudNine (talk) 17:20, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- Lowery is from California, so there's not a direct connection between him and Lovering. I'm pretty sure though that that Spin article about the Pixies reformation mentioned Lovering had drummed with Cracker, though. WesleyDodds (talk) 22:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
GA nomination on hold
editLeave a note on my talk page when you're done with this stuff. cheers, — Dihydrogen Monoxide 22:52, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- No free image? Check Flickr etc. (if you haven't already) - it'd really look good to have one.
- No, there's none. I'll try asking for a photo to be relicensed ([3] and [4] are the one's I'll try first)
- Sounds like a plan. — Dihydrogen Monoxide 07:23, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- "...the "great unacknowledged anchor" of the band[1] and said that his unique influences gave him..." - You need a bit of punctuation before the ref - eg. a comma
- Fixed.
- "he took a job building lasers and continued to drum" - a wlink for "lazer" would be useful here.
- Done.
- "a song about his "obsession" with American singer-songwriter Debbie Gibson." - "American" has been wlinked previously and singer-songwriter is rather evident, so neither of those wlinks are fully necessary
- Removed wlink. However, I'd say that "singer-songwriter" isn't obvious to all readers; it's worth leaving it in so they don't have to click the link to find out who she is.
- "The Pixies toured sporadically throughout 1991 and 1992. They eventually broke up in 1992, mostly due to tensions between Francis and Deal, although the breakup was not publicly announced until 1993." - Source/Ref? (You should be able to get a source from Pixies)
- Done.
- "and Boston band Eeenie Meenie; opportunities for new work dried up" - Reword and re-punctuate --> "and Boston band Eeenie Meenie, until opportunities for new work dried up"
- Rephrased.
- "Lovering's friend Grant-Lee Phillips, took him to a magic convention" - Comma not needed here
- Done.
- Ref 16 probably isn't fully reliable; do you have another source for that statement?
- Done. Replaced with another ref.
- In para 2 of the "The Scientific Phenomenalist and other projects" section, Grant-Lee Phillips is hyphonated - in para 3 it isn't. Fix this up.
- Done.

headline image
editI can't believe this article is featured having such a poor headline image. - tbone (talk) 00:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- That's the flaw of our fair use policies, I'm afraid. It's the worst part of working on Wikipedia, but something we have to tolerate. — Deckiller 00:56, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed. This was the best of a poor bunch. CloudNine (talk) 10:10, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Black Francis
editWhy is Black Francis referred to as Charles Thompson throughout the article? He has never used this name professionally and we don't talk about Jones and Zimmerman when we mean Bowie and Dylan. Cavie78 (talk) 13:22, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, but Dylan and Bowie had real first names for first names (as opposed to 'Black'). They've probably assumed those identities through depol by now too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.30.122.32 (talk) 21:38, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
What does this 'musician' have that is notable?
editExcuse me, but after reading the article one is left in serious doubt about whether this individual meets Wikipedia:Notability criteria to deserve inclusion in Wikipedia, and more still, to have a featured article after him. Specifically, what genuine merits does he have? I haven't been able to identify any. --AVM (talk) 14:33, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

- Yeah, that's just drummer-hating right there, and it will not be tolerated in Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.30.122.32 (talk) 21:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
- Putting "musician" in quotes like that does seem to suggest he thinks drummers are worthless. And I guess he's just never heard of the Pixies? His loss. And beyond all of that, to know that an article has gone through good article review and then featured article review, and question whether or not there was consensus on the subject's notability... Uh. Yes. His notability was established. ??? -- AvatarMN (talk) 05:39, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Better picture
editFor anyone with an offical account here at Wikipedia, I would just like to suggest that the current picture is replaced with either this one or this one, since they are newer, with better resolution and also less blurry. --195.75.73.1 (talk) 10:41, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

FA concerns
editIt looks like this article hasn't really be updated in a while - the Pixies have still been putting new music into recent years, this article stops at 2007. Lovering was still involved with Head Carrier and other later Pixies work, so I don't think this article is comprehensive enough for the featured article standards anymore.
