Also, they would have run out of provisions and died within the first winter, yet somehow the ship lasted TWO winters (1660-61 and 1661-62) in the Arctic, unprepared! Some sailors, drunk off his ass, made up a story, told it to this French guy, who also must have been drunk, and this French guy tells everyone else, who were drunk as well. That's how it went down. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_(boat) is a Siberian ship type used to travel in the sea north of Russia and Siberia in the age of sail. It was tried, but not viable for low value goods such as grain, but did play an important role in the pelt trade of high value goods.
- The story can have a kernel of truth that an enterprising Portuguese joined up. Russia has a number of explorers and cossacks who expanded the realm with these vessels.
- The lack of genuine primary sources other than newspaper articles raises doubts about the veracity. It can nevertheless be a true transmission of source material. João Martins
editThere is another legend, that a João Martins hailing either from Algarve of Aveiro shipped capitão geral of Philippines, Lourenço Ferrer Maldonado, from Philippines to Lisbon (or vice versa) via Arctic Ocean around 1585, passing Bering Straight 143 years before Bering. Na ida atravessou o Estreito em Fevereiro, e saiho da sua boca em Março, pelo que padeceo muitíssimo frio, e escuridade: vio grande quantidade de gelo em as margens, porém nunca achou o mar gelado. Na sua volta, que foi em Junho e Julho, teve sempre muito bom tempo, e desde que cortou o Circulo Artico em os 66° 30' até que o tornou a cortar no meio do Estreito de Lavrador , jamais lhe desappareceo o Sol do Orisonte, e sempre sentio bastante calma. O Author que dá esta noticia, diz que se conserva o Roteiro manuscrito donde ella foi extrahida, escrito mui circunstanciadamente, com as correspondentes relações das correntes, marés, e sondas, com as vistas das Costas da Ásia, e dos rumos, e Costas da America &c.

O segundo lugar he tirado de Debrosses na sua Historia da Navegação às Terras Austraes Tom. I, pag. 73. Tratando da passagem da Índia á Europa pelos mares do Norte:

Já fiz escrever para Portugal a fim de obter, se for possível, o Jornal desta navegação. &c. »
