Golf
editAnecdotally I remember a family friend saying that after the coup the ex President came over to the UK and spent quite a bit of time on the Sussex golf courses. Even before the coup apparently the official limo (diplomatic plates and GAM 1 as the registration) was seen in the local golf course car park from time to time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.74.227.66 (talk) 14:55, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Christian or Muslim?
editIt says he 'converted' and married Augusta Mahoney, an Aku, daughter of Sir John Mahoney, but I don't notice when he converted back to Sunni Islam? 103.23.24.33 (talk) 12:32, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- I agree. It looks like he's a Christian, without any source to the contrary. I added a "dubious" tag. MosheEmes (talk) 15:18, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- I found that the article on his ex-wife, Augusta Jawara, says he reconverted after they divorced. Source: [1]. I don't know if it's reliable. MosheEmes (talk) 15:36, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Sovereignty relinquished expediently
editThe claim that Gambia's "sovereignty, ...was relinquished expediently" is false. Apart from being poor English, the governments call for outside military assistance is not a loss of sovereignty at all.203.80.61.102 (talk) 03:24, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- I agree that it is poor writing, but when asking for outside assistance results in a confederation with another country there is no other way to describe it other than as a loss of sovereignty. 99.192.64.136 (talk) 17:45, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Mamma Fatty?
editWas his mother really named that or did somebody put it in as a joke? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.78.216.110 (talk) 00:53, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, that was her name. The given name "Mamma" (or "Mama") and the surname "Fatty" are actually both fairly common names in the Gambia. Remember they come from a language other than English so the name only sounds odd in that context, not the original language. 99.192.64.136 (talk) 17:39, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
aka David Jawara
editIt seems odd that there is no mention of the fact that Dawda Jawara was known as David Jawara for more than a decade, starting before he formed the PPP and extending until after he became Prime Minister. He had converted to Christianity and adopted the Christian name "David" so he could marry a Christian woman in 1955. A decade later, after he was the leader of the Gambia and the marriage fell apart, he took back the name "Dawda" and converted to Islam. For people who want sources, googling "David Jawara" will lead you to a couple of books that provide this information. 99.192.64.136 (talk) 17:30, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
