De, Dey, Deb/Dev or Deva surname
editHey CharlesWain, have a look at this. It is clearly mentioned how the Kayasthas having the surname Dey changed it to Deb/Dev. In fact, Inden's exhaustive list of Bengali Kayastha surnames mention Deb and not De; in the course of hundreds of years, Deb/Dev was shortened to De, and later some using De surname reverted back to their original surname. - Ekdalian, Yes, I have gone through Bhattacharya's 1896 book. He has mentioned of adoption "Deb" surname by some aristocratic families, but he has also listed Dey and Deb surnames separately. Contemporary sources like Riseley has also mentioned De and Deb separately(Tribes and Castes of Bengal Volume 1, p 216). De/Dey (Bengali:দে, Devnagari: दे) was used by many aristocratic families of other castes too in colonial Bengal, and it's a common surname of many communities even today. But Deb(Bengali:দেব, Devnagari: देव) ,a distinct surname ( modern sources like Basu Bhaumik also treat it so), is much less in use. An official document of 28 April 1770 wrote Maharaj Nabakrishna's surname as Cawndoo (ie Kundu),[ refer Mukherjee, S.N. (1977) Calcutta: Myths and History , p 98-99, NN Ghosh too] but his descendants of Sovabazar Rajbari used "Deb" . The history of surname is not so simple and linear. Hope I made myself clear. Thanks.
