edit

http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19691 or http://www.archive.org/details/deadmansplackan00hudsgoog (many versions on IA, by the looks) --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:54, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I just added a link to the Project Guttenberg version; same difference. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:23, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Æthelwald, Ealdorman of East Anglia

edit

Your Earl Athelwold of Wherwell seems to be our Æthelwald, Ealdorman of East Anglia. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:02, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Linked; thank you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:23, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

DNB

edit

I had a look at http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/olddnb/8463 which notes that "All the circumstances of the first legend are unhistorical (the growth of this legend has been discussed fully by DR. FREEMAN, Historical Essays, i. 15–25);". There's a great deal of work needing to be done on Edgar the Peaceful and probably Æthelwald, Ealdorman of East Anglia. The ODNB article on Edgar is huge. But I digress. The internet Archive is good enough to have a copy of Freeman's Historical Essays at http://www.archive.org/details/historicalessays00free fwiw, and a search for Edgar in the txt version soon finds the section referred to. All probably way too much for this article. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:19, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

So, I couldn't help myself, and added a sentence. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:29, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Saw this after posting on your talk page; repeating here for others' benefit:

Hudson refutes Freeman in Dead Man's Plack and an Old Thorn; I guess we shall never know the truth. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:23, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

But we can enjoy the fight. Those two are really slugging it out. I've rarely seen such a fierce denunciation as Hudson's. He really doesn't like Freeman ;) --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:01, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
It reads just like a certain Wikipedia talk page ;-) Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:54, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The quote

edit

Why do we need the second part of the quote - it does not seem to tell us anthing about DMP. --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:12, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I wondered about that (I've already cut it down once), but thought "green wilderness" and "solitariness" tell us something about the location. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:56, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I buy that. For whatever reason I thought that the first part of the quote conveyed the sense of the location, but you're right, 'tis the second. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:01, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
