Cleanup, and has anyone played this?
editI did a little bit of cleanup, making this more encyclopedic. I guess I have only a few concerns, now:
1. I think "gameplay" should be expanded. Does the whole game consist of walking around and throwing swords underhanded? That may be the case, but we should be a bit more specific.
2. Secret levels. The previous version said something about how the hidden doors can trap you in dungeon mazes "nearly impossible to escape" that have monsters the player cannot reasonably defeat. I took that out because they're points of view, but I felt bad because it could be relevant if the secret level difficulty is massively disproportionate to the rest of the game. Can someone who has played the game quantify the secret levels' toughness?
3. Also, the previous version wrote that the sword-throw looks like our hero is "shooting from his dick." I was mightily tempted to say that the main character "threw swords, unpleasantly, from his midsection," or something like that. Could someone who has played the game describe the sword animation? Actually, for that matter, we ought to confirm if its relevant. If we can find independent sources ridiculing it (sounds like Seanbaby would count as one, but other?), I say we describe it flatly and cite the ridicule.
4. As the concern below notes, it sounds like the game had critical flaws. Obviously, Wikipedia isn't a pillory for bad games, but if this one is notable for being a widely-recognized abomination, due "credit" should be given for its efforts. Cherry Cotton (talk) 20:25, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
I have played the game and I must say it simply appears right in the center ob your body and... yeah, "flies from your midsection". For more references you can watch http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38566.html?type=flv. It's a video from the AVGN and there you can see with your own eyes how cruel the game is. Missing information
editNo one has mentioned the numerous reasons this game was so unpopular. Bugs, sprite overload, collision detection errors etc..
...or the fact that it's made lots of "Worst NES games of all time" lists... --67.168.160.239 (talk) 06:56, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
I owned this game, played it through to conclusion and never touched it again. The criticisms are well-founded.
- Your swords are discharged from the character's nether region, as can be seen in any YouTube clip of Deadly Towers. The cartoonish character animation contrasted unfavorably with the more 'grown up' box art.
- The dungeons (as opposed to the towers) were completely unnecessary to enter in order to either finish the game or obtain the best weapons. They contain only intermediate weapons upgrades (the best weapons are hidden in the towers). The bosses one must defeat are only in the towers. Furthermore, the dungeon entrances are entirely invisible. You learn their locations through trial and error. And even once you know where they are, a collision with an enemy can send you reeling into a dungeon entrance, which is incredibly frustrating. The dungeons are enormous. As a player, when I unwittingly entered one, I would invariably press reset.
- Collisions with enemies would knock the player VERY far back. Not only could it send you into an invisible dungeon entrance, it could also send you plummeting over a ledge to your death.
- When the character throws a sword, it travels extremely slowly across the screen. Since only one sword can be on the screen at a time, this leaves the player defenseless for an extended period of time should the sword miss its target. This is rectified by finding Gloves to increase the sword speed or Double Shot to allow two swords on the screen at once, but initially it makes for frustrating gameplay compared to other games with a similar attack such as the original NES Legend of Zelda. Deadly Towers should also be included in the above article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Josephandrade (talk • contribs) 18:02, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Rationale for removal of 'best seller' content
editThe only source, contemporary or retrospective, that I could find to support the game's alleged commercial success was the one sentence from the previously-cited issue of Computer Gaming World. Notably, it is not among the 75 titles given in List of best-selling Nintendo Entertainment System video games; 8-9 games from each of 1987 and 1988 are there. In the absence of numerical sales figures, I maintain that exclusion of the 'best-seller' description is warranted. Damon Killian (talk) 23:55, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
