editShould this page be renamed to 'Debconf (Conference)' and the Debconf (Software Package) information be removed entirely? Although debconf is a very important software package to Debian, I don't think it needs to be described in Wikipedia.
(Regular Wikipedians: if you agree, please go ahead - I don't know how to implement this myself.)

- That's self-contradicting - if debconf(8) is a very important part of Debian, why would we avoid describing it in Wikipedia? What makes the conference more encyclopedic than a piece of software? --Joy [shallot] 18:27, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)
debconf(8) is imho more or less 'a random piece of the Debian packaging infrastructure' - an important one, but not really important outside its narrow context - it's only important to people developing Debian packages. I bet most people who use Debian don't even know that it's there. I might describe it when I write an article about Debian's software packaging approach.
The Debconf(erence) is more free-standing - people might stumble about it without even knowing what Debian is, perhaps because they see announcements etc. at the location or whatever.

Just a quick Thank You to EdColins for your latest edit - I'm now quite happy with how this is solved.

tagging withthe 'primary sources' tag
editI've been asked to explain why I tagged the article with the 'primary sources' tag, so here goes. Currently all the sources / links are to material generated by DebConf (various organising teams, attendees, etc), while these are great for providing content and information they fail the independence test in WP:GNG. Possible sources that are likely to meet the independence test include: (a) articles written by professional journalists and published in print newspapers / magazines / etc and not based on a press release (b) references to groups outside debian trying to set up events using DebConf as a model (c) academic papers by non-Debian people talking about DebConf. The key is that someone independent needs to be involved in writing the content. Stuartyeates (talk) 20:36, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
