diacritics in his name

as he is Balkan-born (and Balkan-active) and his name throughout the article uses diacritics, the name of this article page should be 'Dejan Jaković' Mayumashu (talk) 02:55, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

I disagree - naming conventions on Wikipedia should mean that there is no accent. However, I'll start a discussion at WP:FOOTBALL in case I'm wrong. GiantSnowman 09:22, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman:: Thank you. I'm well aware of WP:RM. However, this is a problem that goes way beyond just renaming one page. The thing is: When a group of people, who have absolutely no knowledge of the Serbian language and Serbian genealogy what-so-ever, get to have their say in matters relevant to Serbian names, even the most authoritative Serbian experts' opinions would be rendered irrelevant. And before anyone say anything about "righting great wrongs", it's got not a bloody thing about "righting great wrongs". This is an English-language Wikipedia and the vast majority of English-language sources don't use diacritics. GiantSnowman 17:39, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

When we're discussing a Serbian issue and there're equally-valid Serbian sources available, English sources shouldn't even matter. Just as irrelevant as you claiming this is a "Serbian issue" - like I said, here we use WP:COMMONNAME as determined by English-language sources. This conversation is going nowhere, so I suggest you use RM if you feel so strongly. GiantSnowman 16:42, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

I think that since the vast majority of sources write his surname without diacritics, the current title is OK. Yes, indeed he is Serbian from Croatia and his surname originally is written as Jaković, and he also had a short spell with Red Star Belgrade, however, once he decided to represent Canada, he becomes Canadian international footballer and we should follow the way sources write his name, regardless of his origin.
