"Blue Hens"?
editCould someone add some sourced info to explain why someone chose that name?
It's not really in same the same macho vein as other American sports institutions, even with the word "Fightin'"! --Dweller (talk) 15:16, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

– The athletics website and social media lists them as the Blue Hens (no "Fightin'"). In addition, the team is listed as the "Blue Hens" on ESPN.com, with most news stories on Google referring to the team as the Blue Hens. Whichever name is the official nickname, I think it's safe to say that Delaware Blue Hens is the team's WP:COMMONNAME. Tom Danson (talk) 20:49, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

- Oppose There are numerous references made by the University to "Fightin' Blue Hens". The University of Delaware Brand Style Guide lists Fightin' Blue Hens as the third name option; behind only University of Delaware and Delaware. The mascot is specifically mentioned by the University as "The Fightin’ Blue Hen mascot is currently incarnated in the characters of “YoUDee” and "Baby Blue"." CBS Sports lists the Univeristy athletics teams as the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/DEL/delaware-fightin-blue-hens/ and https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/DE/delaware-fightin-blue-hens/). Fox Sports lists the University athletics teams as the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (https://www.foxsports.com/college-football/delaware-fightin-blue-hens-team-standings). The Univeristy-run official Facebook page for the athletics dept says "The Official Fan Page of the University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens." The officially University of Delaware bookstore in partnership with Barnes & Noble lists hundreds of apparel items with names like "Fightin' Blue Hens Campus Shirt", "Fightin' Blue Hens Arch and Logo Pullover", "Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens long sleeve t-shirt", and hundreds of other examples (https://udel.spirit.bncollege.com/delaware-fightin-blue-hens/t-23370829+z-9169512-1563089969). The Scottish Register of Tartans lists the University of Delaware's trademarked and copyrighted official tartan as the "University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hen" tartan (https://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails?ref=10518). - Oppose The evidence from User:Superman7515 is compelling. SportsGuy789 (talk) 06:25, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose The football team (and marching band) are introduced by the stadium announcer as the "University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens". I will create some redirects for the redlinks above. GoingBatty (talk) 14:03, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Homes for Fightin' Blue Hens field hockey, lacrosse, men's soccer, and swimming & diving
editIf Delaware wants to leave the CAA entirely like James Madison, Georgia State, Old Dominion, George Mason, VCU, and others before it, I don't see any reason to keep its field hockey, lacrosse, women's rowing, men's soccer, or swimming & diving teams in the conference. Even though this might not happen, I think Delaware should move its women's rowing, men's soccer, and women's swimming & diving teams to the American Athletic Conference to replace SMU in those sports; its men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and men's swimming & diving should move to the Atlantic Sun Conference, replacing SMU in the third sport; lastly, I think its field hockey team should move to Big East Conference so it could be conference mates with Liberty in that sport as well. What do you all think? Daniel Ivey97 (talk) 17:36, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Daniel Ivey97: Hi there! This page isn't to share our opinions on what their conference moves should be. It's to discuss how to improve the article based on reliable published sources. I'm sure the News Journal (and other sources) will report whatever UD decides, and then we can update the article accordingly. GoingBatty (talk) 03:44, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll keep your comment in mind for future reference. Daniel Ivey97 (talk) 18:46, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
