Ideologies

edit

At the top of the page, it says the Democrat Party is conservative. Then the text goes on talking about it as a liberal party. Maybe a clearer distinction should be made, such as:

Their social politics are conservative, as they are against abortion and gay rights, while their economical politics are liberal, as they believe in low taxes and a small government.

Even so, such a party can't be centre-left. It should be made still clearer. Paul Chang (talk) 06:24, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
If this is true then it's a liberal conservative party like the Republicans, I'm changing it to that.--J intela (talk) 03:10, 10 October 2008
I know that this discussion occurred ten years ago, but I don’t think that they are against gay rights, and I don’t think that their economic policies are exactly liberal, considering that they support universal healthcare and free education.Cnlthefrog (talk) 12:49, 12 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Naming

edit

Yes, the party is officially called the "Democrat Party" in English — see website. Jpatokal 05:27, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I've reverted User:Nightstallion's move as no evidence was given as to why "Democratic Party" is "correct". As counterevidence, I offer their website (democrat.or.th), their membership listing in the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats [1], articles in The Nation and Bangkok Post (Thailand's largest English newspapers) and 122k Google hits. "Democratic Party" seems to used primarily by overseas media who find the actual name odd, which it is, but it's not WP's job to unilaterally "fix" it. Jpatokal 12:29, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Censure (no-confidence) motion

edit

The Democrat Party, led by Sathit Wongnongtoei on June 18, 2008 submitted to Deputy House Speaker Somsak Kiartsuranan a censure motion of no-confidence against Samak Sundaravej and 7 cabinet ministers in the parliament, to oust the 6-party coalition government led by Samak's People Power Party (PPP). The marathon debate would be held on June 28.xinhuanet.com, Thai Democrats launch no-confidence motion against PM and ministers in parliamentnationmultimedia.com, Censure motion filed against PM, 7 ministers--Florentino floro (talk) 12:13, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Text removed from Intro.

edit

After adding a footnote to the sidebar in explication of the party's logo, I removed the above text from the intro as it is repeated further on down in the article. I won't argue with any editor who restores it. --Pawyilee (talk) 08:30, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Logo Slogan - Truth never dies

edit

Democrat Party (Thailand) logo Slogan is legible on their Facebook page: สจฺจํเว อมตา วาจา

Defined in Thai as คำสัตย์ แลเป็นวาจาที่ไม่ตาย Thai proverb
English: Truth never dies, they say thai language
Strictly speaking, วาจา means proverb, but in this context it works to say "they say." --Pawyilee (talk) 10:13, 29 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

A little cleaning

edit

I have corrected the article showing that Abhisit was re-elected as the party's leader and have removed the section entitled Party Leadership as I felt it conveyed nothing more than the infobox at the top of the page. Please feel free to reverse the latter modification if you feel so strongly about it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gonefishing (talkcontribs) 18:48, 13 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Conservative liberalism

edit

This is an answer to a message written by IP 125.24.37.243 on my talk page. I answer it here in order to invite other users to join the discussion.

Original message: My reasons of indicating Democrat Party as "conservative liberal" is that because it seems almost absurd putting "Liberalism" in one line and "Conservatism" in the next; they simply don't make sense unless you say they're the right wing faction of liberalism. This also fits perfectly with the fact that the party seems to be liberal but conservative at the same time. Most importantly, the source for "conservatism" cannot be accessed (only for Financial Times subscribers) so it doesn't really help. Therefore, I believe it should be "conservative liberalism" as original. Regards --125.24.37.243 (talk) 14:19, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your argumentation is reasonable and I personally agree with your assessment to describe the Democrat Party as conservative liberal. However, Wikipedia is based on the principle of verifiability. Therefore, we can only write what can be verified with reference to reliable sources, but not the outcome of our own observations, studies and analysis (original research). If you could cite a reliable source that classifies the Democrat Party as conservative liberal, we shall of course inlude this label. But I have already searched for one and could not find any. Maybe you know more or better places to find useful sources. If so, please help and contribute. --RJFF (talk) 14:44, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, the party is listed as one of the members of Liberal International. The last Democrat government policies can be viewed here which I think is quite liberal to a certain extent. At the end of the day I have no problem with the party being presented as ambivalent but I think to simply write two words next to each other is confusing. Perhaps phrase it like "some aspects liberal, some aspects conservative" ? --125.24.37.243 (talk) 15:03, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
This phrase could be used in the article's body, but in the infobox we can of course only write keywords (or it wouldn't be an infobox). Isn't it obvious that a party that is described as both liberal and conservative is a conservative liberal (or liberal conservative) party? The readers may draw their own conclusions. --RJFF (talk) 15:09, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

According to many Abhisit's interview, they actually advocate to militalism (they support coup).

I don’t think that Abhisit actually supports coups. If you actually watch his interviews you will see that he views the 2018 constitution as a problem. Cnlthefrog (talk) 12:58, 12 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
