Nomenclature

This article confuses the county of Derge/Dege with its principal town and county seat, which is called (nowadays) Gonchen/Gengqing.

Spelling

Where does this spelling Dêgê come from? It seems a highly non-standard transcription. I would advocate Derge (probably the most common usage in English) or Dege (closer to the transliteration) instead. Arthur chos (talk) 02:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

It's the official Chinese transcription. "ê" represents the same sound as "e" does in Wylie. I agree that it should be moved.—Nat Krause^{(Talk!·What have I done?)} 06:26, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Dêgê → Derge — "Derge" is the most common English spelling. It is much more common that Dêgê and somewhat more common than simply "Dege". The article Kingdom of Dêgê should be moved as well. — Nat Krause^{(Talk!·What have I done?)} 14:38, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

There's no policy or real consensus to that effect, but we seem to have settled into a pattern where modern Tibetan counties and prefectures use the government transcription (in this case, Dêgê) while settlements and historical political units use the conventional English spelling (in this case, Derge). For example, Shigatse vs. Xigazê Prefecture, Gyantse vs. Gyangzê County, Chamdo vs. Qamdo Prefecture. I don't know if it's a good idea, but it's the way we've been doing it.—Nat Krause^{(Talk!·What have I done?)} 08:22, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
