Dates

edit

Someone queried in the text how he ascended to the throne in 247BC when he died in 267BC - a good question I think! I've removed from the article and added a clarify tag. Greenman (talk) 12:03, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Someone put the date back. I removed it again. By way of background, there are two postulated start-end reign dates for Tissa. One is 247-207 BC, the other is 307-267 BC. You can find external references for both, but Wikipedia has adopted the latter set (307-267 BC) everywhere, and I do mean everywhere, and that is obviously not compatible with the 247 BC inauguration date that keeps sneaking back into this article.

Credit for Introduction of Buddhism

edit

Hi. There is a serious discrepancy in dates based on the assigned dates for the life and reign of Ashoka the Great, and the introduction of Buddhism into the island. Currently, Tissa is credited with the introduction of Buddhism from Ashoka, when, in fact, Tissa died a year after Ashoka took power. The discrepancies in the dating of Devanampiya Tissa's reign are well noted above by User:G41rn8. Either the earlier possible dates that have been assigned for Tissa's rule are incorrect, or Tissa is incorrectly associated with the adoption of Buddhism through the influence of Ashoka, as it would have been prior to Ashoka's contacts with the island of Sri Lanka...
