Congo

edit

Currently this article links to Congo, but that's a pretty ambiguous term. I'm not familiar with the subject matter, but could we perhaps find something more specific? Kongo people is an option, or something else from the Congo disambiguation page? --Elonka 06:12, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

The source (Anthony's book) isn't more specific. I rather doubt whomever named the community knew any better either. I'm just guessing, but assuming that Anthony was correct in associating the name of the village with free Africans brought to Trinidad in the mid-to-late 19th century, then it was probably just a name applied to a settlement by its neighbours (something along the lines of "there are so many Africans there, it's like it's "the Congo"). That would be my guess. Linking to anything more specific than the dab page would, IMO, be a mistake. Guettarda (talk) 07:06, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for checking, and the timing issue actually makes it easier. If the name came from the 19th century, then there's really only one Congo it could have been, Kingdom of Kongo. That was the name for that area of Africa, until 1914. --Elonka 07:18, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Check your timeline - French and Belgian control of the region dates to the 1880s. In addition, you're misinterpreting what I said. Assuming that Anthony is accurate, the name originates some time after the mid-to-late 19th century. Guettarda (talk) 14:52, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
