editDAB is only 128Kbps.. That kind of sucks, doesn't it? It will actually be a regression in quality from stereo FM broadcasts. Our eyes are generally fairly forgiving to a bad video quality (as we get used to it), however I think bad sound is much more irritating.
Digital consortiums have given us Satellite Digital Video Broadcasting over MPEG-2, DVD Video, the CD - these have all been excellent advances in terms of quality. Why didn't they choose a more decent bitrate like 192Kbps or around that? (Bandwidth issues perhaps, but hey, widen the bandwidth..)
- With proper encoders, properly configured, its not a regression over FM, its transperantly equal on normal sound sources. They can (and do) run stations higher - LyricFM is 160kbps; it has been 192. Most DAB receivers top out at 224, but the standard allows 320k. Bandwidth for DAB in Ireland is HIGHLY limited, so they can't launch more than two multiplexes on Band III until 2012 - to offer the current level of services they need the current level of compression.
- Also, TV by DVB-T or DVB-S is worse than a perfect analogue signal - most of us don't get perfect analogue though. Most of us don't get perfect FM radio, either; and DAB is in infinite improvement over AM. --85.134.154.44 21:09, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Sources
editSince all sources are RTE or RTE related sources I have pared the article back to what is covered by an outside source .Garda40 (talk) 20:27, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- There are no other sources for most things - but this doesn't come close to original research, no more than using secondary sources does. I've put back in what you ripped out and updated it. --85.134.209.247 (talk) 18:08, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Obsolete?
editIsn't DAB incompatible with DAB+ radios? Has anyone done a cost-benefit analysis? If FM radio is to continue then what bandwidth will be saved (and become saleable)? Is it still at mp2 quality? The article needs balance and views from people who are not in the business as well as those who are in it.86.42.198.215 (talk) 08:22, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
- DAB is backward compatible with DAB+ a DAB receiver will not decode DAB+ signals but DAB+ receivers will pick up either. 2A00:23C6:7F84:8E00:C1AC:4CE7:7C9A:E806 (talk) 16:43, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
