Dolmance's comment
editThis is an interesting and informative article, thanks to those who compiled it. In Britain, there's never been such a thing as dinner theatre, but I've been aware from reading biographies of Hollywood stars that it is viewed as a bit tacky. Does anyone know, do actors actually perform in dinner theater while people are eating? If so, no wonder that it's perceived as a real step downwards. In Paul Schrader's film AUTO-FOCUS, Bob Crane, as played by Greg Kinnear, is shown reacting angrily to his agent's suggesting it. I suppose the British equivalent, in career terms, is panto in cities outside of London. Dolmance (talk) 14:55, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
- There is nothing to shape one's understanding of a given topic like experiencing it firsthand. Dolmance, check it out next time you hop the pond. I hear that classical opera used to be enjoyed by audience members who talked and ate during performance. Meanwhile, who is disputing the neutrality of this article, or claiming that it is written like an advertisement? Strange. 156.34.24.183 (talk) 10:43, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
WikiProject Theatre Assessment
edit- stub class - this may be Start class info (I don't have the expertise to say with certainty), but that complete lack of citations relegates it to stub status for the moment.
- high importance - This is a fairly general concept, and should probably be addressed and referenced far more thoroughly than it is at present.

Just a little pre-research on Amazon - the books look like they may be promising references:
- Dinner Theatre: A Survey and Directory by William M. Lynk (1993)
- The Cambridge History of American Theatre, Volume 3: Post WWII To 1990's by Don B. Wilmeth and Christopher Bigsby (2000)

Consistent use of "theater" or "theatre"
editSomeone needs to take a decision on this and apply it to this page because currently, I can see both used quite liberally. --Kisholi (talk) 07:12, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Original research tag
editEverything in this article from "Barn dinner theatre" down is uncited. Furthermore, its prominence in the article gives it undue weight. Looking back on the article, there isn't original reseearch when its properly cited but the mini-essay on the Barn Dinner Theatre doesn't belong in a general article about dinner theatres. It deserves a passing mention at best. Themfromspace (talk) 20:02, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

The history of Dinner Theater is obscure because of different meanings of the word "theater." The section on variations somewhat acknowledges this fact. There has been, for more than a century, acting, as well as story telling and music during meals. And these performances are done in all seasons. I was part of an amateur drama group in Iowa in the early 70's that performed "The Odd Couple" on stage. We were requested to perform it as dinner theater for the local Elks Club, which we did.
