While "characteristic group" is indeed a good literal translation for German Kenngruppe, the authentic English designation for it was discriminant (short: disc). So, the chosen title "Indicator Group Book" might not be the appropriate naming for this article. My recommendation is Discriminant Book. Best wishes --OS (talk) 11:48, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi, several translations of Kenngruppe or Kenngruppenbuch seem to be in use:
www.codesandciphers.org.uk: Tony Sale, The Bletchley Park translated Enigma Instruction Manual, transcribed and formatted by Tony Sale 2001, page 9:
... as the procedure to be used the indicator group procedure, and the "Cipher Book for Indicator Groups" ("Schluesselheft fuer Kenngruppen")...
enigma.hoerenberg.com: Michael Hörenberg, The Kenngruppen System (Navy):
We take the first two groups from the Enigma message P1030690 (indicator groups - Kenngruppen)
Ralph Erskine (in: The Bletchley Park Codebreakers, Michael Smith), Appendix III The Naval Enigma Kenngruppenbuch Indicator System – Used with the Main Wartime Ciphers, page 390:
... disguised the message key by an indicating procedure known as the Kenngruppenbuch (recognition group book) system.
