Disinflation ≠ Deflation

Formally:

• Deflation: ${\frac {\Delta P}{\Delta t}}<0$
• Disinflation: ${\frac {\Delta (\Delta P/\Delta t)}{\Delta t}}<0$

This statement seems incongruous with the math #Disinflation ≠ Deflation. If disinflation is the second derivative of prices with respect to time, disinflation can still exist with deflation. Can someone please clarify? "deflation is always regarded as a negative state of the economy no matter how high it is."

This phrase needs cleanup because it's quite poorly written. Is the author trying to say that inflation rates of -0.2% and -12% are equally undesirable? I doubt that's the case... isn't it true that some economists believe zero inflation should be the target that monetary policy shoots for? 199.46.245.231 (talk) 20:03, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I have not heard anyone favouring zero inflation. For example The European Central Bank has an inflation target of around 2 %. It must be that little inflation is better than little deflation.
