Talk:Dismemberment

Definition in intro paragraph

edit

"living" is not descriptive of the way it's sometimes been used in the press. For example:

Turkish officials allege Khashoggi was killed and then dismembered with a bone saw. [1]

Macabre question

edit

"The condemned's legs and arms would each be tied to the four animals separately, and then all four animals would be commanded or whipped to run in opposite directions, thereby literally 'tearing' the condemned's body in 5 pieces (two legs, two arms and the torso)"

Sorry to be picky, but this would result in 4 pieces, not 5. Three limbs would get ripped off, and the torso would remain attached to the final limb.

That's what I always thought. But since I've never witnessed such an execution, nor found a source that describes this kind of execution in enough detail, it'll probably remain something of a thought experiment. Anybody have an objection to changing the wording of the text? Boneyard90 (talk) 17:56, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is what happened to actual human beings (many of which were innocent). It is a part of our history. I mean, it isn't even close to being as bad as elaborate torture techniques intended to inflict excruciating pain on a person, sometimes lasting for several days. A lot of this stuff still happens in our world although not a whole lot of people know about it. I myself was quite taken aback when I first learned of these atrocities because my parents never thought me that these things were even possible, let alone actually happened to real humans and has been going on for 1000s of years. I really wonder why many parents decide not to teach their children about the realities of life when they ought to find most of this stuff on their own anyway. Not to mention the unlucky ones go through it, never knowing it was even possible for them to fall victim to these atrocities. 8.48.251.116 (talk) 18:24, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Use as capital punishment

edit

Dismemberment is still used as a capital punishment (albeit not very commonly) in at least Iran (http://www.rferl.org/content/article/1079325.html) and Saudi Arabia (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/11/05/africa/ME-GEN-Saudi-Amputation.php) as per the Islamic sharia law. 139.179.137.70 (talk) 18:40, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Drawn and quartered

edit

Quartered yes, drawn no. See Hanged, drawn and quartered for two possible meanings of the word "drawn" neither of which refer to dismemberment. --Redrose64 (talk) 07:44, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

BCE's into BC's, etc?

edit

I reverted some unsigned editor's changes of date designations from BCE and CE to BC and AD. Those edits seemed gratuitous and unnecessary, and for no purpose other than the furthering of a personal agenda. Please initiate discussion here before making such changes. rowley (talk) 20:36, 11 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
