Table, appropriate precision, and source-text integrity
edit@C1MM: Several major aspects of your recent changes to Districts of Bangladesh are problematic:
- Splitting the sortable table of districts into eight tables by division makes it more difficult for our readers to answer questions about them, such as "What is the 2nd most populous district?" or "What are the three largest districts by area?", or to produce an alphabetical list of districts. This article is about all the districts, and the table should be about all the districts too. The eight articles about the divisions are an appropriate place for tables by division.
- Although some sources give precise population values for formal or matter-of-record reasons, those numbers are at best only accurate for one instant in time, until the next birth, death, immigration, or emigration. The purpose of an encyclopedia is to summarize, to show the "big picture" of population. The Manual of Style's uncertainty and rounding section tells us that large numbers should be rounded to an appropriate number of significant digits. Rounding to the nearest thousand is appropriate for district populations. Indeed, the cited source only gives the population in thousands.
- You replaced the source for areas, http://www.bbs.gov.bd/WebTestApplication/userfiles/Image/BBS/PHC2011Preliminary%20Result.pdf, with http://http/%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbs.gov.bd%2Fsite%2Fpage%2F47856ad0-7e1c-4aab-bd78-892733bc06eb%2FPopulation-and-Housing-Census, which is an invalid URL. Presumably you meant http://www.bbs.gov.bd/site/page/47856ad0-7e1c-4aab-bd78-892733bc06eb/Population-and-Housing-Census, but that URL fails verification, the district areas are not listed there.
- In your edit summaries you said you "Added correct populations" and "Corrected population data", but your figures don't match the cited source. You broke source-text integrity.
For these reasons I've reverted your changes.
I have no objection if you still want to add the new introductory sentence, "The districts of Bangladesh are the second-level administrative divisions of Bangladesh", although I don't feel that it really makes the article better. Adding a column for population density is an interesting idea, although readers can easily calculate it from the provided population and area. If you think it's important, add it for all eight divisions, not just three. To make room for the new column, I advise getting rid of the Bengali column (this is the English-language Wikipedia, and non-Latin scripts should be used sparingly) instead of removing the Division column. --Worldbruce (talk) 12:33, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
