Map colours
editThe colours used for the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces are too similar. On my notebook screen I had to concentrate quite hard to see the difference. Roger (talk) 07:41, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
- Limpopo and Mpumalanga's colours are also quite close. — Gk sa (talk) 15:50, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
- A new map will need to be drawn anyway since many district boundaries will change on 18 May. There is this one, but it doesn't have colours or numbers; it would be easy to draw one that does have them, though. - htonl (talk) 16:21, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
- How's this?
- I've numbered the districts with their actual DC numbers, and labelled the metros with appropriate letters. - htonl (talk) 17:51, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
- Looks great - the only possible problem I notice is that Gauteng disappears a bit (mostly because it's so small). I'd suggest switching it's colour with the Free State's yellow. — Gk sa (talk) 13:47, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- Done. (If you don't see the change you may need to refresh or clear cache.) - htonl (talk) 02:59, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- How do I clear the cache? Roger (talk) 09:44, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- It depends on your browser; this site has instructions for all the common browsers. It's probably sufficient to do a "force reload" of this page by pressing Ctrl+F5. - htonl (talk) 10:53, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, the map looks great! Roger (talk) 11:21, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

I should note that there was a mistake in the numbering in the North West, which I've just fixed; you'll need to refresh again to see the change. - htonl (talk) 11:49, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've also added a similar map that represents the current (pre-election) situation, at File:Map of South Africa with provinces shaded and districts numbered (2009).svg. - htonl (talk) 12:05, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Table?
editList of municipalities in South Africa looks great with it's new table format and additional information - perhaps the same could be done here? (I don't know how.) That would eliminate the need for lists such as List of districts of the Western Cape - they don't even exist for all the provinces, thus the redlinks in Template:Administrative divisions of South Africa. This list could easily serve the purpose for all of that, with a handy associated map. See the related discussion in Template talk:Administrative divisions of South Africa. (I also wouldn't know how to get rid of List of districts of the Western Cape etc. after this has been accomplished. — Gk sa (talk) 13:47, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- (delete) Just make sure nothing links to the page and add a delete tag with reason. --77.57.213.153 (talk) 16:53, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- Given the comprehensiveness and up-to-date-ness (is that a word?) of List of municipalities in South Africa this page and others like it are in fact redundant. "List of municipalities in South Africa" has links to every province, district, metro and local municipality article. It even links to the seat town/city of each of them too. Having the whole lot consolidated on a single page makes maintenance easier too - given the current government's habit of frequently changing the names and boundaries. Eliminate the duplication, keep only one list page for everything. Roger (talk) 17:17, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- I generally agree with what you're saying. However, the one thing that might be useful is to have sortable tables of local and district municipalities. The current list can't be sortable because it has both district municipalities and the local municipalities contained in them, and it wouldn't make sense to be sorting them relative to each other, if you see what I mean. Also, it's divided up by province. So, it might make sense to have a sortable table of local municipalities, and a sortable table of district municipalities.
- I like this idea. There's over 500 articles that link to Districts of South Africa, so that suggests to me that it does deserve to exist. How about:
- moving the "Largest Municipalities" section on List of municipalities in South Africa to Municipalities of South Africa so that it is truly a list
- placing province and district information into two new columns (relative to local municipality) instead of headers in List of municipalities in South Africa
- giving Districts of South Africa the same treatment and
- include metropolitan municipalities on both lists?
- I'm happy to help where I can, but most of this is above my skill level, though, so you'll have to direct me. — Gk sa (talk) 18:52, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

- To Gk sa: instead of deleting the articles it would make more sense just to turn them into redirects. - htonl (talk) 17:41, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Table
editOK, so I've drawn up a table of districts which is sortable on every column. I'm open to suggestions on how the columns should be ordered, and what the default order of the rows should be. I generated it from an Excel spreadsheet, so it's very easy to rearrange rows or columns if desired. - htonl (talk) 14:00, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
