With reference to the Moby Dick quote, '...he was dogging us...' - this appears to be used in exactly the same sense as common London parlance of at least the last one hundred years (the living memory of my family), in which it means following with a negative connotation: hanging around in the manner of a stray dog, without sexual overtone. I suggest the Moby Dick quote be removed as irrelevant.

i WANT TO KNOW IF DOGGING IS AN ABBERATION OR NOT ?

I don't know if it is an "ABBERATION" but it may be an Aberration! :)

Any source for the claim that the term has been in use for 30 years?

Ok, but you realize this still doesn't give the etymology of the term? Jane White could still have the proper etymology even if it's been in use for 30 years. The article somehow disputes the etymology by saying it's been around for a long time. That doesn't make a lot of sense. (JoeMystical) 19:35, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
Ok, but even if we take your word for it that you were around when the term just started being used, you still haven't given us the etymology of it. Why did anyone start using that term 30 years ago? You don't know do you? Jane White has not denied that the term was around 30 years ago. Rather, she gives what she believes is the origin of the term. (JoeMystical) 18:16, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
I'll make it more NPOV. But, you must remember, that on Wikipedia assertions need to be sourced. If you wrote a published paper saying that dogging was around 30 years ago that would be fine, but this is just your word off the top of your head. Also, you were critical of Jane White's assertion. I'm not accusing you of being wrong. I'm just trying to stick with procedure. (JoeMystical) 06:10, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

I came up with the term dogging in about 1999. When speaking with a work mate of mine I informed them of a practice of couples which parked their cars in secluded places and liked to engage in sexual activity in front of an audience of mainly men who would often join in. This activity took place in Windsor great park, England. This work mate of mine spoke to someone they knew at the local newspaper and the story made the front page. It was picked up by a national tabloid called The Sun newspaper, and made its front page as well. I called it 'dogging' as the mainly middle aged married men who liked to watch others performing sex acts or join others in group sex out of doors. Used the excuse of 'taking the dog for a walk' as a cover story to their wives and partners for the extra-marital sexual activity they engaged in. Also, the dogs were often sent off into the under growth to sniff out couples engaging in sex in the bushes. The dogs also provided an added bonus of protection in case the 'dogger' stumbled upon people who did not wish to be watched or have others join them in sexual activity in or out of their cars in the undergrowth and subsequently turned violent. It is not known if beastiality involving the dogs occurred during these 'dogging' meetings. (Anonymous)

Dogging is an activity performed by people with a DOG. They take their dog for a walk in a place known to have couples having sex in the hope of observing or joining in. Why is that such a hard concept to grasp! Just because others like to have group sex in public places, it dose not make them a dogger! To go dogging or be called a dogger you need a DOG! A lack of a dog means that you are an exhibitionist swinger that likes out door sex with strangers.
IMO, the most likely etymology is the one about "taking the dog for a walk" as an excuse. Whilst I don't have any evidence to back this up, it seems to ring true. Bear in mind also the reference to Newcastle Brown Ale as "the dog", which is supposed to derive from "taking the dog for a walk" whilst slipping out to the pub for a beer. The same would apply for slipping away from the wife for a session.

I think you will find that the art of sticking hamsters in your rectum is called Felching and is under the umbrella of zoophilia! :)
no its not, felching is the act of somebody sucking seman out of another person's anus with a straw. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.108.73.47 (talk) 09:51, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I thought that was Gerbiling http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerbiling. Why no mention of Stan Collymore, he IS the most famous former enthusiast (that we know of). Oh I mean Dogging, not Gerbiling.

2006-01-18: Just edited the external links to remove two of them not directly related to Dogging; one leads to a sexual contacts page (www.worldofdogging.com) and the other to a porn web (www.real-dogging.com).

Suggest it's time to axe this article down a bit, or at least write most of it in the past tense. Dogging never was as prevalent as many made out, and has faded even more over the last year or two. True, there is still the large cluster of opportunist pay-sites that pretend that joining them will give you access to a whole new world, but in reality most 'dogging sites' are nowadays are either deserted, locked-up or inhabited by men sat in cars waiting for a couple to turn up and give them a show, which hardly ever happens.
I believe Dogging did initially come from the act of 'taking the dog for a walk to view sexual activities' as suggested, but dogging no longer refers to JUST this act you do NOT need a DOG for this anymore. It is now coined as the term for sexual-activities in semi-public places like car parks. Similar to the word gay. To say it just means 'happy' like it did at its time of origin would be denying its modern day use. Dogging has also moved on slightly from its original definition, although is at least still related...unlike 'gay'
So as the introductory sentence to the article implies, "dogging" is the correct term for anyone having sex in a semi-public place, whether exhibitionism or the participation of more than 2 people is intended? Judging by the rest of the article's content, I'd assume not, in which case, the sentence should read "Dogging is a British euphemism for a craze which involves engaging in sexual acts..."
However, if the term does apply to public sex in general, I'd say that observation is certainly not encouraged in all cases and I'm not at all convinced that the majority of public sex occurs when people meet randomly or by arrangement; I don't have any sources to back this up, but I'd like to see some to the contrary before I'll accept that meeting up like that is more common than couples looking for the most private place available, whilst still being out in the open Sk8a H8a 01:00, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
The term "dogging" has been used inthe West Coast of Scotland foe eons to refer to absconding from school- I believe this is called "bunking off" in England. So, your claim that the term has no other vernacular meaning is "pure mince!"- A Glasewgian

Hi and welcome to Wikipedia. Copyright was not my concern. This article reads more like a dictionary article than an encyclopedia article. You might want to create an entry in [1]

A Wikipedia article should tell why the subject (in this case Carping) is notable, perhaps the history, cite sources, external links are often good, especially if they help validate the credibility and validity of the article.

I don't know enough about the topic of Carping to have an opinion about the suitability of an article about it for Wikipedia ... it's just that this article is very brief and reads more like a dictionary entry.

I hope this helps. If not, you are welcome to contact me at my talk page Brian 00:29, 23 June 2006 (UTC)btballReply

Sorry about that! I removed the copyright violation notice. If you run the external website, I believe there aren't any problems with relicensing the content here. My apologies for my mistake!

As for the speedy deletion notice, you probably want to move the "hangon" to the main page so the administrators see it.

However, you may still want to read section 2 of Wikipedia:Avoid neologisms, which discusses the standards for putting new words into Wikipedia. If you still want to keep this article after reviewing those standards, your best bet is to accumulate evidence that this word is used by a largish community of people.

Even if your first article doesn't work out, thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! emk 00:32, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

US slang?

edit

"It should be noted that "dogging", in American English may be a critical or insulting slang term." - I'm not American, and don't know why. It needs to be explained, at least very briefly, at that point. 86.143.48.55 (talk) 00:47, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

This has still not been fixed. It's not helpful to say that a term may be insulting, but not to say why. 86.149.2.192 (talk) 00:54, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dogging in Greenland?????????? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.156.153.150 (talk) 20:58, 26 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dogging is surely "a critical or insulting sland term" in any country!

Shouldn't the article simply describe "dogging" as a sexual practise, rather than describing it as a "British English" slang term - it is far more widespread than that.203.184.41.226 (talk) 01:36, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
