2nd Largest?

From the Synagogue article:

The Dohány Street Synagogue or Great Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary is the largest synagogue in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, after the Beit Midrash of Ger in Jerusalem, the Belz World Center and the Congregation Emanu-El in New York City. It seats 3,000 people and is a centre of Neolog Judaism and hosts the Jewish Museum of Budapest. The building was built in 1854-1859 according to the plans of architect Ludwig Förster.

Seems to be some discrepancies across a large number of articles as to which order these Synagogues rank. Grunners (talk) 22:08, 31 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Largest synagogue

The information on the Dohany Street synagogue is not wrong, merely made obsolete by new buildings. The new Gerer synagogue in Jerusalem seats 8,500 , the new Belz synagogue in Jerusalem seats 6,000. These buildings have to be seen to be believed. Check at wikepedia: Synagogue. They're not as magnificent as Dohany, merely immense. The N. Y. Times citation was just a travel article. The Dohaney was the biggest for so long, people, even the infallible New York Times, just got used to saying that it was without checking what Jews have been building lately.Elan26 (talk) 23:22, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Elan26Reply

I've seen this and it's hard to believe that the other two alleged larger synagogues don't even have their own pages on Wikipedia (at least I haven't found the links in the list). Please provide references as The New York Times article is at least something reliable. Squash Racket (talk) 09:04, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

2nd largest? (bis)

I reverted you edits on Dohany. Nothing personal but the Dohany synagogue is certainly not the second largest. See above discussion, See Synagogue#World's largest synagogues If you search around you will find several others that are larger. The reason why I flagged it as vague is that it is not clear whether it's about capacity of seated or standing people, building size... Hope this helps. --Alberto Fernandez Fernandez (talk) 19:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

You should really NOT just leave a vague flag right in the lede. Go ahead and fill in the references please. ᴳᴿᴲᴳᴼᴿᴵᴷᶤᶯᵈᶸᶩᶢᵉ 20:50, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
When I edited the page a couple of days ago, it was written that it was the largest of Eurasia. This was factually incorrect... After I had corrected it, you reverted my edit reaffirming it was the second largest in the world and the largest in Eurasia, which includes Israel, without providing any ref for it. Still not correct. So why are you keeping asking to put refs on the lead where no ref are supposed to be per MoS and you don't use refs yourself? I had to put some refs to stop people writing it is the second largest.
It was probably the case until a decade after the creation of Israel. I wish there was a fully fledged wiki page classifying synagogues per length, volume, capacity,... but there is not. So what is left? Logic.
We don't need a ref to say that 2 is larger than 1. The listing I put on the lead was based on the talk page discussion which is based on the capacity listed on their respective wiki pages. Pay them a visit. I flagged the fact with vague as I don't want reader to blindly believe what is written until proper classification with references is provided. Hope I made myself clearer. --Alberto Fernandez Fernandez (talk) 23:09, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Every other solution is better than just leaving it vague and unreferenced. OK, I think it's better if you rephrase the line to something neutral like "one of the largest synagogues in the world". ᴳᴿᴲᴳᴼᴿᴵᴷᶤᶯᵈᶸᶩᶢᵉ 07:42, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I took a look at you previous edits of this page (see [1]). You kept putting back incorrect facts: largest in Europe became largest in Eurasia, fifth became second largest in the world,... ! Given that, you saying " every other solution is better than vague" is funny to say the least. You filled the article (with good faith) with incorrect facts, provided no reference for it and reverted fellow editors work flagging them as vandalism off. And you are the one asking for references? Ok.
I corrected the article with facts that are easily verifiable and proper refs. When I can't find a good ref (other than travel websites) but I believe the fact is correct, I flag it with "citation needed". There is no shame with that. If it is not correct, I expect somebody out there to correct it. Feel free to edit the article, if it is wrong, but please try to improve its quality incrementally. --Alberto Fernandez Fernandez (talk) 08:37, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Instead of attacking me, you need to do the page on Major synagogues worldwide or something similar, clearly you can do the research. ᴳᴿᴲᴳᴼᴿᴵᴷᶤᶯᵈᶸᶩᶢᵉ 08:32, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
