China Doll
editCould someone please write an article on porcelain dolls so I can link to it from the China Doll (disambiguation) page. --Gbleem 23:44, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- China doll is now a full-fledged article. Siawase (talk) 17:53, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Poor English
editPoor English and Ugly Format This article needs a total rehaul. Aside from being poorly written, and including long lists of meaningless names, the photo layout is awful. --Gilabrand 18:58, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- I have rewritten the lead section, resized and rearranged the pictures, and added a category for doll collections and museums which people are invited to add to.
Cornhusk Dolls
editThere is no Wikipedia page on Cornhusk or Corn Husk (two words) dolls anywhere. Cornhusk dolls are culturally important especially in Native American Indian cultures (and they now exist in many other parts of the world as well). We need something on Wikipedia about Cornhusk dolls. At least a stub. I don't know how to set up a new page myself but maybe someone could quickly do this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.93.5.244 (talk) 02:18, 30 September 2010
- Done Corn husk doll. --Shirt58 (talk) 10:31, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Great job! Corn husk dolls were mentioned in this article briefly, but I expanded a bit based on the new article and added a link to it. Siawase (talk) 15:48, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
Roman doll
editThis was unsourced and a bit too detailed for an overview article like this, but I didn't want it to just get lost so I copied it here:
- One doll, found near Prati in Rome, was made of ivory and lay beside her owner who had died at the age of eighteen. Next to the doll was a small box, also made of ivory, containing tiny combs and a silver mirror. The doll had rings on her fingers and held a tiny key, which unlocked the box.

Doll can be also a toy for dog
editDogs playing with dolls is quite common too. Its not just human toy as stated in first sentence of article. There are also images on internet with dogs carrying dolls in their mouth, such as http://puppysites.com/deluxe/k-ninedobie.jpg and http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7047/6983586919_f96cfcb6a7_z.jpg. In fact, my pet dog loved to carry a doll in its mouth and toss/fetch it. Even zoo animals like monkeys are known to play with dolls. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.169.164.126 (talk) 11:12, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Miniature Doll House Dolls and Doll Houses
editI thought the Doll article was very well done. I would like to see a section on Doll House Dolls and Dollhouses, and a link to a separate article on Doll House Dolls and Doll Houses.

Gender & "Maternal Instinct"
editIn the section on "Uses, appearances and issues", someone makes the following claim, which I have marked as Citation Needed:
"Dolls have also traditionally been toys for young girls who, as opposed to boys, possess a maternal instinct."
This claim is questionable to me, and has no source. I'm sure there have got to be some sources on the history of dolls created for children, and I'm willing to bet it's a complicated argument that nobody agrees on. Whatever there is, it's likely more nuanced than just "girls have a maternal instinct". I'm pretty sure there are arguments out there that maternal instinct doesn't exist at all in humans, and dolls are used to make up for that and train girls for motherhood; rather than catering to innate qualities, dolls could be a tool for enforcing gender expectations via early training.
In comparison, the article for Fashion doll stays fairly neutral on gender: "They are manufactured both as toys for children to play with and as barbie collectibles for adult collectors."
Going that route is overkill; dolls definitely have a gendered history as toys created primarily for girls. But we need to be able to make sourced claims instead of assumptions based on gender stereotypes. IdentifierExpected (talk) 19:13, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- One editor did a slew of unsourced edits with a strong WP:POV, I don't see any good reason why any of them should be kept:[1] Siawase (talk) 19:22, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
See also
editThe article might have a "See also" section. One entry might be Sex doll. But I wonder if such a cross-reference might be a red flag for those who are concerned that the Doll article, or Wikipedia more generally, would be inappropriate for children; an undesirable consequence to be sure. This discourages me from creating such a section. Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 18:30, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
Art dolls
editI'm trying to add some information about art dolls, a little at a time, but my links to examples of them are being removed. How can I provide examples for the article please? HappyGertrude (talk) 15:28, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- Write about the subject in the article and use more than one reliable references (WP:RS) that are not spammy sites selling the dolls. 10mmsocket (talk) 15:40, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
