Dolyddelen

@The Mirror Cracked: - do we have a citation that it was "often" spelled 'Dolyddelen', or is there a chance that citation is just a single typo? I'm not finding any sources that support that claim directly. Sam Walton (talk) 22:57, 15 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Samwalton9: that's the contemporary spelling used in newspaper articles. There are about 5000 articles using that name in the Library of Wales archive: [1]. The Mirror Cracked (talk) 23:04, 15 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
So it is - thanks! Sam Walton (talk) 23:05, 15 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
My pleasure! I was surprised, as I've not come across this spelling before, but it was clearly common in the 19th. century, and even into the early 20th. The Mirror Cracked (talk) 23:07, 15 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

The more you dig into the history of the village's name, the more questions arise about it, both its spelling and its meaning. For example this piece in the Cambrian News on 19th. April 1878 dismisses the "Dolwyddelan" spelling and proposes that Dolyddelen is more accurate. Like several other sources of the time, it connects the "Elen" of Dolyddelen to Saint Elen after whom Sarn Helen is named. All very interesting.
