Believe this article is factually incorrect
editCan anyone provide a quote for the battle of 87 AD being at Tapae? I accept that Fuscus lost a battle in Dacia with Legion V (Philip Matyszak, The Enemies of Rome, p. 217) but to my knowledge there is no record of where this battle took place exactly. What indication is there that it took place at Tapae??? - PocklingtonDan 12:29, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- Tactius says only "The news came in, the loss of all those armies in Moesia and Dacia" (Tacitus, Agricola, 41). Unless someone can provide a cite I will move the "battle of 87" contents to Fuscus Campaign in Dacia or similar, I do not believe it belongs here - PocklingtonDan 12:31, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm currently researching this and related questions, and will be resolving this by weeks end. I've located some good pdf sources on line, and will be using JSTOR to pin things down, including the appropriate names used by classical studies experts. Some developments on that already, such as Tapae is a mountain pass, where I'd thought it a strong point/fortress. Or perhaps is/was both. Cheers! // FrankB 22:21, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Right. More than this, what is listed here as "Battle of Tapae (87 AD)" is nowhere named as such. We do not know where this severe Roman defeat took place. Eg take a look at these references (Google Books):
- András Mócsy, Pannonia and Upper Moesia, Routledge, 1974
- Matthew Bunson, Encyclopedia of the Roman Empire, Infobase Publishing, 2002
- J.B.Bury, A History of the Roman Empire from its Foundation
- E.T.Salmon, A History of the Roman World from 30 B.C. to A.D. 138, Routledge, 1990
The exact location of Fuscus' defeat is not mentioned in any of the above sources. Instead, in one of them, the Roman victory of 88 is called as the first battle of Tapae (the second one is that of Trajan in 101). --Dipa1965 (talk) 22:33, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Rewrote the article, using the sources mentioned above. There are three battles, only one of them (the last one) is the actual battle of Tappae.--Dipa1965 (talk) 00:33, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Legio III Flavia
editI have altered this in the text, as it appears to be a typo (either in source or in preparing the article) for IIII Flavia. The III Flavia appears to be a later legion while the IV Flavia Felix was stationed in Upper Moesia at this time, according to its wikipedia entry Monstrelet (talk) 09:32, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed a typo on my own part. Many thanks!--Dipa1965 (talk) 10:14, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
