original page move
editThere are now four different Don James in Wikipedia. I moved this Don James to Don James (football) so we can create a disambiguation page for all four people, which would be (in alphabetical order) football, mystic, video games and writer. Coll7 21:32, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
National champions
editI'm not sure the rules (or if any even exist) for listing national championships since FBS college football is so ambiguous with them and the NCAA formally does not recognize any national champion in FBS. Yes, Washington "won" titles according to other polls in 1960, 1984, and 1990, but I think the general consensus is that the AP and Coaches Polls (especially prior to the BCS) are what everyone recognizes as national champions. As controversial as BYU's 1984 win was, every publication I have seen lists BYU as "national champion" for 1984, not UW. This article from 2007 seems to indicate the school only recognized the 1991 title as "legitimate" until 2007 when they decided to recognize the title from the Helms organization for the 1960 team. I know many schools that won't "claim" titles even though certain polls crowned them "national champions" for a given year. Has there been any consensus on this? Another point to make was that when the info from the NCAA was added in earlier today, the pages specified were 76-81, which did not have the additional poll numbers on them. --JonRidinger (talk) 03:08, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- In comparing other coach articles and the NCAA Division I FBS national football championship article which lists every awarded national "title" from the different press orgainzations (using the NCAA record book), when the team won a "minor" poll they aren't listed on the coach's article. Examples include Joe Paterno for the undefeated 1994 Penn State team, Bobby Bowden for the 1996 Florida State team, and Pete Carroll for the 2002 USC team, all of whom were named "national champions" by at least one group. None of them list "national championships" on the coach's article in the year-by-year chart. There are additional examples as well. It has been my understanding that the infobox for "national champion" is for the consensus, not for every poll/group that may have named it national champion. --JonRidinger (talk) 03:30, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

editThe infobox describes James as defensive coordinator at Florida State and Michigan in the 1960s. No source is provided, and I find none. What is this assertion based on? Cbl62 (talk) 16:38, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
