I agree. And imagine if a study were done on everyone worthy of a Wikipedia page throughout history. Would anyone make it through without having their accomplishments overshadowed by cherry picked and over weighted examples of indiscretions (as much lamentable as they were a sign of the times)? I've learned more about the natural world and been brought to tears of joy more often in reading Peattie than any other author I can think of. And there are innumerable passages where he demonstrates his respect and admiration of races (most notedly Native Americans) to make this passage stand out as entirely atypical.
