- Donkeys are grey and hard-wearing. The fabric of these coats is similar. They also turn a paler grey (even a navy blue one) where worn.
- They evolved BTW from the short reefer jacket (of naval origin) and its heavier slightly napped woolen fabric, rather than (as claimed here) the more upmarket sack coat, which was longer and of lighter fabric, usually with some cotton or linen in the mix.
