Historical Interest
editI thought the histroy of the village was rather more interesting than that! Maybe I haven't understood.
AIUI licensed premises are forbidden within the confines of the village by Act of Parliament and as a result of the excesses of the canal workers.
The ruins of the original village around the church are not - as is frequently quoted - a vacated village like Ampney St Mary, abandoned during the plague, but the remnants of the village destroyed by the vicar et al in 1796 as part of the Enclosures Acts
The village lies on the border of Gloucestershire, so is serviced by two administrative areas (Gloucestershire and Wiltshire) even though the Post Office, who insist that the Post Code system is intended entirely and solely for their benefit - despite the views of government to the contrary - use the same Post Code for the entire village; thus leading to glorious confusion and much traffic between Trowbridge (Wiltshire) and Gloucester.
What with all that, and the most wonderful village facilities in Gloucestershire, largely donated by the Airborne troops of many nations who went to war from the local airfield, the fact that the village stands on enormous gravel reserves through which clean water flows on its way towards London.... I could go on.
Pronunciation?
editHow is "Ampney" pronounced? It looks like "Amp-nee", but I recall hearing that the "p" is silent, so it would sound "Am-nee". Which is it, please? Feline Hymnic (talk) 10:17, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
